The DJI Mini 4K is a product for drone beginners who are concerned about the cost and the need to register with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Weighing less than 249 grams, it falls below the registration threshold in most countries, making it suitable for general users who want to capture cinematic 4K footage without the hassle of complicated procedures.
Currently, Amazon is offering a discount on this drone, reducing the price from $299 to just $239 for Prime members, considered the lowest price ever. DJI also offers bundled packages with two or three batteries at a discounted price, compensating for the usual maximum battery life of 31 minutes.
This move comes amid a US government ban on the import of certain DJI drone models. On October 17, the company informed its distributors that the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was invoking the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) to detain some drone models, preventing their clearance into the US.
According to Reuters , DJI asserts that it does not use forced labor at any stage of its manufacturing process and provides documentation demonstrating compliance with the UFLPA Act. They argue that this is part of a broader effort by the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the origins of products from China.
US lawmakers have long expressed concerns that DJI drones pose risks to data transmission, surveillance, and national security. Last month, the US House of Representatives voted to ban new DJI drones from operating in the US, and is awaiting Senate review.
Around the same time, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced it was seeking input on whether to impose restrictions on Chinese drones. This would effectively lead to a ban on them in the U.S., similar to measures being proposed for vehicles manufactured in China.
"We are looking at drones that use equipment, chips, and software originating from China and Russia," Commerce Minister Gina Raimondo told CNBC .
DJI holds a near-absolute dominance in the US drone market, with nearly 50%, sometimes even 70-80%, of the market share. Their devices are sold not only for entertainment but also for commercial, consumer, and even public applications.
Some of the company's other popular products, such as the Osmo Pocket 3 handheld camera with image stabilization, have had their barcodes altered for sale in the US market. Because they are products of a Chinese company, consumers will soon have to pay a high tax of $799 and there is a possibility of import bans.
