Accordingly, Amazon submitted its application to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick regarding the acquisition of TikTok from China, just before the April 5 deadline.
Both Jeff Bezos's company and ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, declined to comment. Amazon's stock immediately rose 2% following the news.
Amazon's offer to acquire TikTok, first reported by The New York Times, comes at a time when the fate of the short-video sharing platform in the US hangs in the balance.
Last year, the US Congress passed legislation setting a January 19 deadline to end TikTok's existence unless it was sold to an American for national security reasons. However, on his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order extending the deadline by 75 days to allow the app to find a new owner.
President Trump may soon announce a decision on the fate of TikTok. Currently, several tech groups are interested in acquiring the TikTok platform, including YouTuber MrBeast, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and even Perplexity AI.
TikTok is currently valued at $50 billion. ByteDance has not confirmed whether it is in negotiations with potential buyers and has also declined to disclose whether it would agree to sell the social media platform to a US company.
