How can a vegetarian diet help control diabetes?

A partially vegetarian or vegan diet may help reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. For people with diabetes, a vegetarian diet also offers many other health benefits.

A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that people who follow a vegetarian diet tend to have less excess body fat, are healthier, and have fewer illnesses, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Furthermore, vegetarians also have a lower risk of colorectal and prostate cancer. This benefit stems from their avoidance of red and processed meats, which are associated with increased cancer risk. Additionally, the high levels of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables contribute to cancer prevention.

A vegetarian diet, especially a vegan diet, is high in fiber, which helps stabilize blood sugar. Fiber not only promotes digestive health but also slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. Furthermore, fiber increases feelings of fullness and curbs hunger, thus supporting weight loss.

To reap the benefits of fiber, an adult should consume 21 to 25 grams of fiber per day. Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, and nuts are excellent choices.

Numerous clinical studies have shown the benefits of a vegan diet for people with diabetes. This diet helps control blood sugar, increase insulin sensitivity, and prevent complications. Long-term vegans also reduce their need for medication and prevent nerve damage caused by high blood sugar.

Common complications of diabetes include kidney failure, atherosclerosis, stroke, hearing loss, dementia, and nerve damage in the eyes or limbs. A vegetarian diet cannot prevent these complications but can minimize their impact on health.

However, a concern with vegetarianism is that it can lead to deficiencies in certain nutrients. For example, not all, but some people who follow a long-term vegetarian diet may be deficient in vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3s. These nutrients can be supplemented through eggs, dairy, or nutritional supplements.
