(CLO) Google announced on November 26th that it is assisting Indian authorities in investigating an accident that killed three men after their vehicle plunged into a river from an unfinished bridge, allegedly due to following directions on Google Maps.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday (November 24) in Uttar Pradesh, northern India. The group of victims were on their way to a wedding when their car suddenly plunged into the Ramganga River from an unfinished bridge.

According to the Hindustan Times, the driver followed the route indicated by Google Maps, even though the road leading to the bridge was not yet completed.
Police have questioned a Google Maps executive, as well as staff from the local Department of Public Works, according to the Press Trust of India.
A Google spokesperson extended their deepest condolences to the families of the victims and affirmed that the company is working closely with authorities to assist in the investigation of the incident.
A local police officer said the bridge had been damaged in a flood last year, but had not yet been fully repaired, leading to the unfortunate accident.
This isn't the first accident related to directions from a navigation app. Last year, two doctors died in the southern Indian state of Kerala when their car plunged into the Periyar River after following directions from Google Maps.
These incidents once again highlight the need for cautious use of technological tools, while also raising questions about the responsibility of both location service providers and local authorities in ensuring traffic safety.
