Previously, saving parking locations on Google Maps wasn't a new feature, but users had to do it manually by tapping their location on the map and selecting "Saved parking location." The breakthrough of this update lies in the fact that the entire process is now completely automated.
Rio Akasaka, senior product manager at Google Maps, said the feature can automatically detect parking locations even when users don't manually pin them. These locations are saved for up to 48 hours, and the system automatically removes the marker as soon as it detects you start driving again.
To activate this feature, users need to open Google Maps and connect to their car via USB, Bluetooth, or CarPlay. After the journey is complete, a small marker will appear, ready to be used the next time you open the app, acting as a personal parking assistant, and will disappear immediately when you resume driving.
Interface and compatibility updates
This automatic location saving feature has been rolling out on iPhones for about a month now. In addition, Google has also launched another utility that allows users to use any custom car icon they've set as a parking icon, replacing the boring default "P". Google has been adding custom car icons to Maps since 2020 and recently added eight new shapes and colors earlier this year.
Currently, the automatic saving and deletion of parking spaces only works on the iOS platform. Although Android users also have a similar parking reminder feature, the limitation is that the parking icon will not disappear automatically; users are required to manually delete it.
This new feature is like having an invisible assistant sitting in the passenger seat, automatically remembering where you parked without you having to remind them, patiently waiting there until you return, and automatically deleting that memory when you start the engine and leave, ready for the next journey.
