According to a report by Android Authority, Android 16 is currently in the Developer Preview phase. The latest developer preview of Android 16 includes a multitasking system inspired by OnePlus's Open Canvas. This will be an interesting improvement for large-screen and foldable devices, as OnePlus's Open Canvas is considered one of the best multitasking tools currently available.

Code found in Android 16 DP2 refers to a split-screen mode that's under development. Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority has attempted to get this feature working on his Pixel device, although the feature isn't ready yet and doesn't currently split apps correctly.
This feature is still in testing and it's uncertain whether it will be released on Android 16. If completed in time, it could be available on all Android phones and tablets, and manufacturers like Samsung could particularly leverage these features for book-style horizontal folding devices.
Android 16 is expected to be released in the first half of this year.
