Applying technology to transform agriculture.

(HTV) - When science and technology go hand in hand with farmers, urban agriculture will become increasingly efficient, sustainable, and create more value for the city.

During the period 2025-2030, Ho Chi Minh City will focus on developing modern urban agriculture in a green, circular, and high-tech direction. Currently, the city has 692 crop production facilities, 734 livestock farms, and 50 high-tech shrimp farming facilities. In line with Resolution 57, the city's farmers are considered the center of the digital transformation of agriculture.

Boldly applying modern science and technology, the greenhouse model for growing cantaloupe in Dat Do commune is becoming a shining example of high-tech agriculture in the eastern part of Ho Chi Minh City.

Thanks to cultivation in a closed environment, the melons achieve consistent quality and are regularly purchased by traders and supermarkets. Each year, this model brings in hundreds of millions of dong in revenue for many households.

Ms. Pham Thi Tho, Dat Do commune, Ho Chi Minh City

Ms. Pham Thi Tho, a farmer from Dat Do commune, Ho Chi Minh City, said that cantaloupe grown in greenhouses is less susceptible to pests, diseases, weather, frost, and other external impacts. Cantaloupe grown in polytunnels is also cleaner and safer because farmers can manage and control the nutrition and care processes. Conversely, cantaloupe grown outdoors is almost inefficient, and the produce is not as visually appealing.

Leafy vegetables are grown in enclosed greenhouses using an automated hydroponic system.

As a key agricultural product of Ho Chi Minh City, leafy vegetables grown by farmers in Hung Long commune in enclosed greenhouses with an automated hydroponic system have yielded high economic returns.

The systematic investment shows that farmers are proactively adapting to the demands of modern production. High-tech agriculture is transforming small plots of land into areas that generate significant economic value.

Mr. Ngo Thanh Huy - Manager of the hydroponic vegetable garden in Hung Long commune, Ho Chi Minh City

Mr. Ngo Thanh Huy, manager of the hydroponic vegetable garden in Hung Long commune, Ho Chi Minh City, shared that the era of development requires farmers to constantly update their knowledge to keep up with trends, improve their skills, ensure quality and safety, and contribute to creating jobs for local people.

Ho Chi Minh City aims to become a center for research, testing, and technology transfer. Over more than 20 years of development, the city's high-tech agricultural zone has successfully built 567 high-tech application models; successfully bred 15 F1 varieties; brought 7 million seedlings to market; and nurtured 69 businesses.

This result further affirms Ho Chi Minh City's leading role in the development of modern urban agriculture.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hien - Deputy Head of the Management Board of the Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Agricultural Zone

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hien, Deputy Head of the Management Board of the Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Agricultural Zone, said that to implement Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW and Resolution No. 68-NQ/TW, the Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Agricultural Zone has focused on implementing a project to expand and establish high-tech agricultural zones. Phase 1 will establish 7 zones, which will serve as core areas for researching processes and technologies to spread throughout the city and other provinces. Phase 2 will establish 6 zones focusing on other fields, thereby forming large-scale production areas.

In the research sector, focus on automation, big data, and promoting biotechnology for breeding high-quality varieties. Emphasis is placed on training and transferring new technologies. Incubation efforts are also prioritized, including organizing innovation and startup competitions to identify practical projects, incubate them, increase production value, and ultimately aim for export.

The shift from traditional production thinking to the development of modern agriculture.

The rural areas of Ho Chi Minh City are gradually transforming. A new face of urban agriculture in Ho Chi Minh City is taking shape. The practical models being implemented show a shift from traditional production thinking to an agriculture based on knowledge, technology, and data, making Ho Chi Minh City's agriculture a modern, green, and sustainable model.
