Map app updates new address after province merger.

From July 1, Vietnam officially reorganized its administrative units across the country. The administrative boundaries have changed significantly when the number of provinces/cities has decreased from 63 to 34, while the district level has been abolished and many communes/wards have been merged. From here, the addresses of the locations have also changed. However, popular mapping tools such as Google Map and Apple Maps have not yet updated the new data.

Recently, the Vietmap Live mapping software, developed by a domestic company, is the first app to update location data according to new administrative units. In version 3.1.1 updated on the evening of July 1 on Android and iOS, the tool added 34 provinces and cities and 3,321 communes and wards.

Currently, the default address when users search on the app will be compared with both pre-merger and post-merger information. In particular, the software prioritizes displaying information about the new city after the merger. For example, when searching for Vinh Phu ward, Binh Duong province (old), the app still navigates to the correct area. However, the information displayed on the graphic is Lai Thieu ward, Ho Chi Minh City.

At the same time, when the user selects a location on the map, the returned information also includes two data domains. The large text is information according to the new administrative boundaries. The old data is below, smaller in size but enough to follow.

However, Vietmap Live still has many shortcomings. The app does not clearly display administrative boundaries between wards and communes after the merger. Users need to determine information in border areas that are difficult to check.

The software supports the function of looking up new administrative units, hidden deep in the settings. This map is taken from the Vietnam Geographic Information Portal, only includes local boundaries, does not support search and navigation functions.

Currently, users who want to check their new residence information after the merger can access the VNeID application. The Ministry of Public Security 's software has updated information on hometown, permanent residence, and temporary residence according to the new data domain.

In addition to Vietmap Live, Goong Maps software, a unit providing map APIs for popular services such as Viettel Post and Be ride-hailing, also announced an upgrade based on cadastral information after the merger. However, this platform is only providing a closed trial version.

Meanwhile, popular mapping software such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, Here Maps or Waze have not been updated yet.
