Apple guide to turn off MacBook auto-start when opening the lid

In 2016, Apple began introducing an auto-power-on feature to MacBooks, which would activate when the lid was opened or when a USB-C power source was plugged in while the lid was open. This was seen as a convenience for users who did not want to have to press the power button, especially if the button was damaged.

According to The Verge , in case users do not want the MacBook to automatically turn on when opening the lid or plugging in the charger, Apple has provided instructions to turn off this feature with the following command lines.

How to turn off auto-restart for MacBook running Apple Silicon chip

First, the user needs to log in with an administrator account, open Terminal from the Applications > Utilities folder, enter one of the following commands

Disable auto-start when opening the lid or plugging in the charger: sudo nvram BootPreference=%00

Disable autostart only when lid is opened: sudo nvram BootPreference=%01

Disable autostart only when plugged in: sudo nvram BootPreference=%02

Enter the administrator password when prompted (the password will not display as you type), then press Return.

The above command will help turn off the MacBook's auto-start feature when opening the lid.

If you want to re-enable autostart, use the following command in Terminal: sudo nvram -d BootPreference

How to turn off auto-start on MacBook running Intel chip

If you're using an Intel MacBook from 2016 and want to disable auto-start, follow these steps:

Log into your MacBook with an administrator account, open the Terminal app, and enter the following command: sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00

Enter the administrator password when prompted, then press Return.

If you want to restore the default settings, enter the following command in Terminal: sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03

Finally, try shutting down, closing the lid, and checking to see if the feature has been disabled on your MacBook.
