These days, people in Po Si Ngai village, Ban Xeo commune come to help Ly A La's family harvest galangal. Among those who come to the household, many want to learn from the growing experience and exchange labor to make the harvest faster. With an area of nearly 2 hectares, in 2024, it is estimated that La's family will earn about 100 million VND, much higher than growing rice and corn.
Mr. Ly A La said: "Growing rice only yields 20 bags of paddy, about 10 million VND, but growing galangal has a higher yield."

In Po Si Ngai village alone, there are over 30 households growing galangal, bringing the number of households in Ban Xeo to hundreds, the largest in San Lung and Can Ty villages with 50 hectares. On average, each hectare of galangal yields 20 tons of tubers, with a selling price of 15,000 VND/kg. It is estimated that in the 2024 galangal crop, Ban Xeo people will earn over 3 billion VND.
Ms. Hoang Thi Truyen, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Ban Xeo Commune, Bat Xat District, said: "Regarding the galangal plant, the Farmers' Association has promoted it to the people as well as farmer members to participate in planting and expanding the area. In 2020, the area for growing galangal was more than 10 hectares, and now it has increased to 50 hectares."
Because galangal tubers are consumed well, the planting area in Ban Xeo has been expanded, now reaching over 50 hectares.
The galangal tree has been planted by Ban Xeo farmers in recent years, associated with the famous vermicelli making profession of the locality. Due to high economic efficiency and favorable consumption, the area has been expanded. Along with the establishment of a cooperative to process the specialty of dong vermicelli, the remaining quantity is sold to traders to serve jelly production.
Mr. Tran Kieu Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ban Xeo Commune, Bat Xat District, added: "Compared to 2023, the output of galangal has not decreased, the total income of the people in the commune in 2024 is estimated to be over 3 billion VND. The galangal tree contributes to increasing people's income, and is the main tree to reduce poverty in the locality".
To develop the raw material area of galangal, Bat Xat district propagates and mobilizes people to convert less fertile land, unfavorable irrigation water, or ineffective rice and corn areas to grow galangal. With the current 162 hectares, one of the 10 endemic crops of the district, Bat Xat is making efforts to turn galangal into a commercial crop, increasing income for local people.
