APU Alumni – Generation of Global Citizens Contributing to World Science and Economy
As one of the first educational institutions in Vietnam to apply the American standard training model, APU not only builds trust with parents and students in the country, but also becomes a bridge to bring thousands of Vietnamese students to the world. In particular, the 2009-2010 alumni generation - the first seeds to grow from the APU international educational environment - today shine in many fields, from science and technology, biomedicine, finance to creative startups.
Among them, Phung Khoi Quoc Toan currently lives and works in Scotland as a researcher on Parkinson's disease at the University of Dundee. The CURTAIN project - a breakthrough in applying Mass Spectrometry technology developed by Toan - has earned him the title of "Innovator of the Year 2022".

Another talent is Dinh Khang Hy – an advanced materials researcher and lecturer at Tufts University, USA. From innovative projects at Roger Williams University, Hy continued his academic journey with a full doctoral scholarship and is now expanding his research on Aerogel – the lightest material in the world.
In addition to research, APU alumni have also made a strong mark in the fields of management and finance. Truong Buu Van, who graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the University of Texas at Austin and then went on to receive a master of science degree from Northwestern University, is currently a Senior Executive Manager at the global biopharmaceutical corporation AbbVie. Meanwhile, Nguyen Ngoc Xuan (Susan), with a CFA degree – the gold standard in the global finance industry – is currently working at Wellington Management Company in Boston, where she continues to assert her position as a young financial expert.

In the medical field, Nguyen Tran Thuong Uyen – one of 87 excellent students who surpassed more than 3,000 candidates to enter UCLA’s Dentist training program – has now graduated and is practicing in the United States. Uyen once shared: “The luckiest thing for me is to study at APU – a place that instilled in me the spirit of constantly moving forward.” In addition, Tran Thien Hong Anh, a graduate of Oregon Health & Science University, is a dentist at Oregon Health & Science University.
Also joining the generation of outstanding alumni is Dr. Ho Hoang Duy – APU valedictorian in 2014 – currently an Associate Professor at California State University, Fullerton. After receiving a full scholarship in Computer Science from the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC), Duy successfully completed his dual PhD program in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. The three brothers Duy – Phuc – Uyen are all valedictorians/salutatorians of APU and have been successful in the US – a typical testament to the sustainable spread of APU’s international education platform.

The success story does not stop there as APU's outstanding students continue to make their mark at the world's top prestigious schools: Nguyen Ngoc Mai Thy (APU's 2022 salutatorian) was accepted into three top public universities in the United States, including UC Berkeley (#1), UC Davis (#6) and UC Irvine (#10), and chose UC Berkeley to study dual majors in Philosophy, Law and Psychology; Nguyen Huong Vi (2019 valedictorian) is studying at the University of British Columbia - ranked #2 in Canada; Duong Ngoc Bao Chau (2022 salutatorian) and Nguyen Hung Manh both received Unconditional Offers of Admission from the University of Sydney - Australia's top university, where they are both studying Health Sciences; Kim So Yeon (2021 salutatorian) - is a student at Yonsei University - ranked #2 in Korea; Le Ngoc Truyen (valedictorian of the class of 2012) earned a Master’s degree in Chemistry from UC Berkeley and is working in the biotechnology industry in San Francisco; Tran Xuan Khanh Linh (valedictorian of the class of 2024) won a scholarship of nearly 530,000 USD and was admitted to UC Berkeley – the number 1 public university in the United States; Dao Duc Tuan Kiet (second place winner of the class of 2025) who just received an early admission letter from New York University (NYU) – one of the top schools in the world, where he will study Electrical & Computer Engineering. And many other APU alumni are also achieving success at prestigious universities around the world – a great source of pride for the entire school.
The achievements of APU alumni are not only the pride of the school, but also a strong mark in the 30-year journey of developing Vietnam-US relations on the basis of knowledge and the future.
Dr. Tran Nguyen Thy Binh – The founder of APU's global education mission
Behind the outstanding marks of the American International School System APU and American University in Vietnam - AUV is the pioneering, passionate and courageous journey of the founder - Dr. Tran Nguyen Thy Binh. In the context of the early 21st century, when international education was still a new concept in Vietnam, Dr. Thy Binh bravely took the lead, bringing the American standard education model to Vietnam - not only as an academic solution, but also as a strategic mission to change the future of the young generation.
Under the leadership of Dr. Thy Binh, APU & AUV have not only become pioneers in the field of international education in Vietnam, but also opened the door to study abroad directly to prestigious universities in the US and the world for thousands of Vietnamese students. The strategic cooperation network with prestigious universities in the US, the joint scholarship program, and the implementation of American-standard curriculum right in Vietnam have helped thousands of students shorten their study abroad journey, save costs, and at the same time be ready to integrate into the global learning environment.
Not only did she build a school system, Dr. Thy Binh also shaped a humane educational philosophy that promoted openness, independence, and global leadership. Throughout her 30-year journey of development, she has always been a leader, inspiration, and companion to students, parents, and teachers to overcome all challenges – from cultural differences to crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
She shared: “I believe that education is not only the shortest path to integration, but also a sustainable bridge to help Vietnam confidently reach out to the world. Bringing the spirit of American-standard education to the young generation of Vietnam is not only a transfer of knowledge, but also a resonance of humanistic values, open-mindedness and global responsibility.”
Over more than three decades of development, APU and AUV have established a cooperative network with dozens of leading universities in the United States such as Arizona State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Central Michigan University, UMKC, San Diago State University, the University of California system..., creating a diverse educational ecosystem from high school to university, contributing to the training of high-quality human resources, serving the cause of national development in the context of globalization.
Throughout that journey, one of the clearest evidences of Dr. Tran Nguyen Thy Binh's value and influence is the deep trust from parents. Mai Xuan Hoan's family, with more than 10 years of accompanying APU, sent all three sons to study at APU. The two older children - Mai Le Khanh Trinh (Validator 2021) and Mai Le Khanh Hung (Validator 2025) - both graduated with outstanding achievements, receiving scholarships worth 388,000 USD and 550,000 USD from prestigious universities in the US and Canada, respectively. Notably, Khanh Hung also won the International Merit Admission Award from the University of Toronto - a university ranked Top 1 in Canada. "The American standard program, quality professors and comprehensive learning environment are what made us put our full trust in APU," Hoan shared.
Sharing the same belief, Mr. Nguyen Trong Nghia, parent of 2025 runner-up Nguyen Chau Ngoc, said he has followed APU for more than a decade, since his family members such as Bao Chan, Thuy Vy and Ngoc Truyen have all become successful after graduating from this school. “I sent my daughter to APU because I believe in the quality that has been proven through many generations,” Mr. Nghia said. In 2025, Chau Ngoc continued that tradition by winning nearly 12 billion VND in scholarships from top universities in the US – once again affirming APU’s pioneering role in the journey to conquer international academics of Vietnamese students.

From Education to Sustainable Development – Expanding the Strategic Role in Bilateral Relations
Not stopping at creating an American-standard education system in Vietnam, Dr. Thy Binh is continuing to affirm her pioneering role in connecting progressive educational values, contributing to building a future of sustainable development and deep integration for the young generation of Vietnam. The American Education Village project initiated by her is not simply an educational complex - but a long-term vision to build a comprehensive training ecosystem, throughout from high school to university and graduate school, focusing on key areas such as Semiconductor Technology, Artificial Intelligence AI, Computer Science, Health - Medicine, Business, Multimedia Communications...
Inspired by the model of closely linking schools, businesses and society in the United States, the project brings together major partners such as Boeing, US partner universities, and the active support and accompaniment of local authorities and diplomatic agencies of the two countries. This is not only a step forward in the field of education, but also a foundation for creating knowledge-innovation-startup centers, playing a key role in the strategy of developing high-quality human resources for Vietnam in the integration era.
Sharing about this orientation, Dr. Tran Nguyen Thy Binh emphasized: “Education cannot be limited to books or degrees. We need an ecosystem where students not only learn to know, but also learn to do, learn to live, learn to develop the community and the country. That is why I believe that education must go hand in hand with a vision of sustainable development and global responsibility.”
