Bac Ninh has met all 7 criteria for a centrally-governed city.

(PLVN) - The Secretary of the Bac Ninh Provincial Party Committee, Nguyen Hong Thai, has just signed and issued a proposal seeking approval for the establishment of Bac Ninh City as a centrally-administered city based on the current administrative boundaries of Bac Ninh province. According to the proposal, the locality has fully met all 7/7 criteria for a centrally-administered city as stipulated by regulations.

Notably, Bac Ninh currently meets 13 out of 15 criteria for a Type I urban area and is deemed eligible for consideration for Type I urban status in the near future. This is considered an important foundation for the locality to gradually complete the conditions for building a centrally-administered urban model.

According to the plan, Bac Ninh has a population of approximately 4 million people, meeting the minimum requirements for a centrally-governed city in the Red River Delta region. The province's total natural area is over 4,718 km², formed by merging the administrative boundaries and population of the former Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces.

Currently, the province has 99 commune-level administrative units, including 33 wards and 66 communes; the ratio of wards to the total number of commune-level administrative units is 33.33%. The urbanization rate is 50.78%, with an urban population of over 2 million people.

The plan also assesses Bac Ninh as one of the important growth poles of the Hanoi Capital Region and the Northern Key Economic Zone. In recent years, the locality has maintained a high rate of industrial development, becoming a center for electronics manufacturing, high technology, and attracting foreign investment among the leading provinces nationwide.

Furthermore, the inter-regional transportation infrastructure continues to be invested in comprehensively, providing convenient connections with Hanoi , Noi Bai International Airport, Hai Phong seaport, and major economic centers in the North. This is considered a significant advantage that helps Bac Ninh expand its urban, industrial, and service development space.

According to the plan, the province's economic structure will continue to shift positively towards industry and services; per capita GRDP will remain high. The fields of education, science and technology, culture, and social welfare will also see many positive changes.

The development of the plan to establish Bac Ninh as a centrally-governed city is expected to create more development opportunities for Bac Ninh, while also enhancing its role as a growth engine for the Capital Region in the new phase.
