Doctors from Binh Dan Hospital flew to Con Dao early in the morning to provide emergency medical care to the local people.

The director of Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City immediately dispatched a skilled doctor to Con Dao Special Zone early this morning to provide timely support in treating the critically ill child.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health announced that early on September 8th, Dr. Nguyen Ta Quyet, Head of the Hepatobiliary Department at Binh Dan Hospital, flew to Con Dao to assist in the treatment of a critically ill patient who had been admitted to the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center one day earlier.

According to a preliminary report from Dr. Ly Bao Duy, a specialist in surgery at Binh Dan Hospital, currently on the first rotational assignment in Con Dao, a 17-year-old male student was recently admitted to the emergency room in critical condition after a fall due to a traffic accident.

The patient was hit from behind by a vehicle, then fell forward 4 meters, and was taken by family members to the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center for emergency treatment.

Bedside ultrasound results showed left kidney injury, localized low to moderate amount of ascites in the lower abdomen, MSCT scan showed grade IV left kidney injury with perirenal fluid and blood accumulation (T), grade III splenic injury, pancreatic tail contusion, free fluid in the abdominal cavity suspected to be hemorrhagic fluid.

The patient received 1 unit of packed red blood cells and 4 units of plasma. The patient is currently stable and continues to receive close monitoring and intensive care.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health highly appreciates the decision of the director of Binh Dan Hospital to send more skilled specialist doctors to Con Dao to strengthen expert consultation, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with severe injuries, instead of transferring patients back to the hospital.

This is the safest option for patients with blunt abdominal trauma. Furthermore, the Con Dao Medical Center now has sufficient treatment facilities, especially an operating room and a blood bank recently established for Con Dao by city hospitals.

Previously, on September 6th, Associate Professor Tran Vinh Hung - Director of Binh Dan Hospital - held a remote consultation with doctors dispatched from Con Dao and general emergency surgery specialists at the hospital to successfully perform an emergency laparoscopic appendectomy on a fisherman. This was also the first successful laparoscopic surgery case in Con Dao.

Associate Professor Tran Vinh Hung said that after taking on the task of developing expertise for the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, the hospital advised the Department of Health and the local authorities to equip the operating room with a modern system, from laparoscopic abdominal imaging, _CO2 gas, and standard surgical instruments to an anesthesia and recovery system.

In addition, the hospital assigned two experienced doctors in general surgery and anesthesia/resuscitation to work on-site. With these resources, the hospital's management board and the on-site medical team decided that applying laparoscopic appendectomy techniques to the patient was entirely feasible.

Binh Dan Hospital quickly sought guidance and received approval from Associate Professor Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, to perform this first laparoscopic surgery.
