Could this sixth-grade math problem about lions trying to survive, which involves mathematical induction, stump you?
Induction is a very important method in mathematics. We will apply this method through the following fun problem :
Twenty lions were in a cage. Their favorite food was sheep. However, the lions knew that any lion that ate a sheep would become drowsy and risk being eaten by another lion nearby.
A lion eating another lion will also become drowsy and risk being eaten. A sheep is brought into a pen. Each lion would love to eat it, but will only do so if they are certain they won't be eaten. What will happen to the sheep?
Note that if a sheep is eaten, it will only be eaten by one lion, and not shared with the entire pride. The lions in the enclosure are all very intelligent and they always act in their own best interests.
