Gareth Bale once played for Real Madrid. |
In his role as a commentator for CBS , Gareth Bale expressed his disappointment with Real Madrid's attacking style. He said that coach Xabi Alonso's team lacked "spark" and innovation in the final third of the field in the 0-1 loss to Liverpool in the League Phase, Champions League.
“I didn’t see any magic moments from Mbappe or Vinicius. It’s disappointing that Real Madrid didn’t have the quality that people always expect,” Bale said.
The former Welsh star believes Real Madrid lack a true striker in the box. “They mess things up. Sometimes they just need to challenge the defenders. They are quicker than everyone else, but they are afraid to cross the ball because there is no one waiting in the box. Real need a real No. 9,” Bale stressed.
Sitting alongside Bale on set, former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry also agreed and took aim at Vinicius. “He had the chance to go toe-to-toe with Conor Bradley in the first few minutes and then let him breathe. When he had the advantage, he had to push him until he got a yellow card, but Vinicius just let it go,” Henry said.
The French legend also gave an example of Vinicius passing the ball back in a one-on-one situation, then receiving the ball back in a one-on-three situation. “I don’t understand it. When you have the chance, attack. Why stay back and make things more difficult?”, Henry shared.
According to Bale and Henry, Real Madrid are lacking a real “spearhead” to take advantage of the speed and technique of Mbappe, Vinicius. Without a clear destination in the penalty area, Real’s attack becomes cumbersome, ineffective and loses the identity that makes them classy.
