Gareth Bale once played for Real Madrid. |
In his role as a commentator for CBS , Gareth Bale expressed disappointment with Real Madrid's attacking play. He argued that Xabi Alonso's team lacked "spark" and unpredictability in the final third of the pitch during their 0-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League League Phase.
"I didn't see Mbappe or Vinicius create any magical moments. It's disappointing that Real didn't have the quality that people always expect," Bale said.
The former Wales star believes Real Madrid lack a true center forward in the penalty area. “They make things complicated. Sometimes all they need is to challenge the opposing defenders. They are faster than everyone else, but they are hesitant to cross because there’s no one waiting in the box. Real Madrid need a genuine number 9,” Bale emphasized.
Sitting alongside Bale on set, former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry also agreed and directly targeted Vinicius. “He had a chance to go head-to-head with Conor Bradley in the first few minutes, then let his opponent breathe. When you have the advantage, you should press until he gets a yellow card, but Vinicius ignored that,” Henry said.
The French legend also cited the example of Vinicius passing the ball back when he was in a one-on-one situation, only to receive it back in a three-on-one situation. "I don't understand it. When you have a chance, attack immediately. Why retreat and make things more difficult?" Henry shared.
According to Bale and Henry, Real Madrid is lacking a true "spearhead" to capitalize on the speed and technique of Mbappe and Vinicius. Without a clear target in the penalty area, Real's attack becomes cumbersome, ineffective, and loses the identity that defines their class.
