Barcelona's winning streak has come to an end. |
After securing the title early in the previous round, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick decided to make eight changes to the starting lineup. This resulted in a disjointed start for the visitors, who quickly struggled against the determined Alaves, a team desperate for points to escape the relegation zone.
In the very first minute, Ibrahim Diabate rattled the Barca defense with a dangerous shot. Meanwhile, Barcelona also created a few notable opportunities, but the lack of sharpness from their strikers resulted in a rather stalemate. After almost the first 30 minutes, both teams had taken a total of 9 shots but not a single one was on target.
In attack, the duo of Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford performed poorly, making it very difficult for Barcelona to break through the home team's solid defense. For most of the time, the ball just lingered in the midfield area, significantly reducing the quality of the match.

In that closely contested match, Alaves unexpectedly found the opening goal just before halftime. In the 45th minute, Ibrahim Diabate capitalized on space after beating Marc Bernal before unleashing a spectacular volley that beat goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, giving the home side the lead.
In the second half, Alaves proactively retreated with a five-man defense to protect their advantage. Although Barcelona dominated possession and constantly pressed in the final 15 minutes, the visitors were completely helpless against their opponent's tight defense.
Goalkeeper Szczesny had to make another save from Diabate's dangerous header to prevent Barcelona from conceding another goal. However, the visitors' late efforts were not enough to prevent their first defeat after a run of 11 consecutive wins in La Liga.
With this unexpected victory, Alaves defeated Barcelona for the first time in 8 years and 18 previous encounters.
