Barcelona is too versatile.

Hansi Flick is entering his first season at Barcelona with an advantage many coaches dream of: a highly flexible squad.

Rashford's presence makes Barcelona's attack even more formidable.

It's not just about having two replacements for each position, but about most players being able to play multiple roles, opening up a wide range of tactical variations. In a context where finances are still constrained, this is a smart solution to optimize the squad. But whether this versatility translates into real strength, or is merely a temporary "stopgap" solution, remains an unanswered question.

From Rashford to the "Asian piece" of the puzzle.

The signing of Marcus Rashford and the pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea were not just commercial gains. They also gave Flick the opportunity to experiment with personnel in various formations, especially the 4-2-3-1, which had become the standard. Except for the goalkeeper and Robert Lewandowski – the only pure center forward – almost no one was "stuck" in one position.

This significantly increases Barcelona's adaptability. Last season, Flick's squad was flexible, rotating players depending on the opponent and stage of the season. This season, the German coach has more "pieces" to rearrange the game as he sees fit. Test matches against Vissel Kobe, Seoul, and Daegu showed a clear trend: Barca will play with players who can be constantly swapped, creating unpredictable layers of attack and defense.

Joan García quickly established himself as the number one goalkeeper after the summer tour. Barca's willingness to pay the €25 million release clause from Espanyol shows Flick wanted a young goalkeeper who was good enough to be the long-term starter. Szczesny was retained for another two seasons as an experienced backup option, while Diego Kochen – a La Masia product – is likely to be the third-choice goalkeeper.

However, the "Ter Stegen problem" remains unresolved. The German goalkeeper will be out for several months after back surgery, and his relationship with the club remains strained. Iñaki Peña is also being offered for sale. This means that, despite having a primary and backup option, the goalkeeping position at Barca still carries significant risks if Joan García suffers an injury or his form declines.

Coach Hansi Flick has a very strong squad at his disposal.

Ronald Araujo staying is good news, while Jofre Torrents' promotion provides more options. Last season's quartet – Kounde, Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Balde – were untouchable when fit. This season, Araujo has replaced Inigo, creating a new framework with steel and speed.

The strength lies in the fact that many defenders can play in two positions: Kounde, Eric Garcia, and Araujo can all play center back or full-back; Gerard Martin is being tested in the center of the defense; and Marc Casado can play right back if needed. This versatility allows Flick to rotate personnel effectively, but in return, the defensive system needs time to stabilize to avoid a situation of "many options but no clear framework."

Midfield - the brain that shapes the gameplay.

Frenkie de Jong and Pedri are two indispensable names in the midfield. They combined seamlessly last season and were the engine controlling the tempo of the game. Gavi, who plays best when coming from the second line to penetrate the penalty area, along with Marc Casado, will compete for the remaining position in the two-defensive-midfielder formation.

Marc Bernal needs time to recover from a year-long knee injury, while Fermin is better suited to playing closer to the opponent's goal. Flick's availability suggests that Barca's midfield will be both mobile and creative, but also requires clear role assignments to avoid overlapping responsibilities.

If you had to choose one of Barca's most outstanding strengths right now, it would be their attack. The trio of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Lewandowski are almost a given in the fans' minds. But Flick isn't restricted: Ferran Torres and Rashford can both play in all three attacking positions. Raphinha is versatile, switching wings; Ferran and Balde can cover the left wing.

Lamine Yamal was an inspiration in Barca's style of play.

The attacking midfield position is also a "flexible area." Dani Olmo is likely to start, but Fermin Lopez is ready to compete. Raphinha, Pedri, and Gavi can all play behind the central striker, opening up many tactical variations depending on the opponent. With these options, Barca can switch from playing wide to central attacking combinations in just a few minutes.

A flexible squad gives Flick the ability to rotate players, reduce injury risks, and create unpredictability. But top-level football also demands stability. Barca needs a clear framework in each line to establish routines and maximize understanding.

Furthermore, versatility only truly comes into play when each player has mastered at least one preferred position. If everyone can play in many places but isn't outstanding in any one area, the team is likely to lack a solid foundation in terms of expertise.

The new season will be a test of whether Flick can turn this arsenal into a winning advantage, or whether he will have to struggle to find a balance between tactical creativity and consistency.

With a grueling schedule and the pressure of winning titles, Barca needs not only versatile players but also a perfect harmony. Rashford, De Jong, Pedri, or Lewandowski may be the main notes, but only when Flick finds the right balance between flexibility and consistency will the melody of victory resonate regularly at Camp Nou.
