According to the South Korean news site New24 on May 20th, IU is reportedly receiving around 500 million won per episode. With a total of 12 episodes, her estimated salary is around 6 billion won (approximately 105 billion VND). This enormous figure quickly became a hot topic of debate on South Korean forums and online communities.

Many Korean viewers believe that IU's salary is not commensurate with her performance in the drama Perfect Crown.

The acting performance doesn't match the huge salary.
The wave of criticism intensified as numerous posts circulated questioning whether IU truly deserved such a high fee. One particularly attention-grabbing post read: "If this is true, then the future of Korean cinema is truly worrying. IU receiving 6 billion won for such poor acting?"
In Perfect Crown , IU plays Seong Hee Joo, the daughter of a wealthy chaebol family, who marries Prince Lee Ahn, played by Byeon Woo Seok. Her character is portrayed as ambitious, intelligent, courageous, and possessing exceptional business acumen. Later, she becomes the one who influences the prince to abandon the constitutional monarchy and choose to live as an ordinary citizen.
Despite the drama achieving relatively good viewership ratings, many viewers expressed disappointment with the script and the ineffective performances of the two main actors. Numerous opinions suggested that IU and Byeon Woo Seok lacked "chemistry," failing to create emotional depth in the drama's romantic storyline.
Some viewers commented that IU's expressions were somewhat exaggerated, many emotional scenes felt forced, and her eyes failed to convey the character's inner feelings. Additionally, many felt that her portrayal of a wealthy heiress lacked the necessary elegance and charisma. Some even argued that the queen character in the drama was more visually impressive.
Besides the acting, the film also faced much controversy regarding its creative direction, historical portrayal, and costume style. On social media, viewers accused the production team of failing to incorporate elements of Korean culture appropriately, particularly in palace scenes, where the costume design and styling were deemed to have an overly strong Chinese aesthetic influence.
One of the most noteworthy reactions came from renowned history lecturer Choi Tae Sung. He criticized the income disparity in the entertainment industry, stating, "Actors earn hundreds of millions of won, while history consultants are only paid a few hundred thousand won."
This latest wave of controversy continues to spark a major discussion in South Korea surrounding the exorbitant salaries of celebrities, the phenomenon of idols venturing into acting, and the question of whether star power is being prioritized over acting ability and production quality.
Despite facing mixed opinions, IU remains one of South Korea's most influential artists, with significant commercial value in music , film, and advertising. However, the controversies surrounding Perfect Crown highlight the rising public expectations for A-list stars, commensurate with their exorbitant earnings.
