The transitional period between seasons is a time when the weather changes abruptly, with temperature and humidity fluctuating daily, leading to a higher incidence of certain illnesses among the population.
According to health experts, the changing of seasons creates a favorable environment for respiratory pathogens to thrive. The Department of Respiratory and Gastrointestinal Medicine at Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital has recorded an increase in respiratory cases recently.

According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Huy, Department of Respiratory and Gastroenterological Medicine, Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital, the number of people hospitalized due to respiratory illnesses, especially acute cases, is on the rise.
Many patients with chronic lung conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are hospitalized due to severe exacerbations. In particular, some patients with no prior history of chronic conditions develop severe respiratory symptoms.
A typical case is that of a 48-year-old female patient in Lap Thach, Vinh Phuc . The patient was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of cough, phlegm, and high fever. After tests and X-rays, results showed extensive consolidation in the left lung. Thanks to intensive treatment, the patient recovered after a week and was discharged.
Another case involved a 75-year-old male patient from Ha Hoa, Phu Tho, with a history of hypertension. He was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of cough, shortness of breath, and severe inflammatory damage in his left lung. Due to his advanced age and multiple underlying conditions, his treatment lasted two weeks.
According to Doctor Nguyen Xuan Huy, cold weather and high humidity create favorable conditions for viruses and bacteria that cause respiratory illnesses to thrive. Sudden temperature changes, along with large differences between day and night, weaken the immune system, making it difficult to adapt. This creates conditions for pathogens to attack the body, especially in people with underlying conditions such as asthma and allergic rhinitis.
If upper respiratory infections are not properly managed, symptoms can worsen, leading to sinusitis, pneumonia, or even lung abscesses.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Huy offered some advice to prevent respiratory illnesses during the transitional seasons, such as vaccination. Accordingly, people should get vaccinated against diseases such as influenza, pneumococcal disease, and Covid-19, especially the elderly and those with chronic diseases.
Avoid exposing your body to cold air. When going outside, dress warmly, especially keeping your neck, chest, and soles of your feet warm. Ensure you eat a balanced diet and stay well-hydrated. Manage underlying conditions such as hypertension and diabetes effectively.
When experiencing respiratory symptoms, people should consult a doctor instead of self-medicating with antibiotics or using prescriptions intended for others, to avoid dangerous complications.
With proper preventative measures, the risk of respiratory illnesses during seasonal changes can be minimized, protecting your own health and that of your family.
