Respiratory diseases increase when the weather changes seasons

Việt NamViệt Nam17/11/2024

The transitional season is a time when the weather changes suddenly, temperature and humidity fluctuate every day, causing the rate of people contracting certain diseases to increase.

According to medical experts, the changing of seasons is a favorable environment for respiratory pathogens to thrive. The Department of Internal Medicine, Respiratory and Digestive Diseases, Phu Tho General Hospital has recorded an increase in respiratory diseases recently.

The transitional season is a time when the weather changes suddenly, temperature and humidity fluctuate every day.

According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Huy, Department of Internal Medicine, Respiratory and Digestive Medicine, Phu Tho General Hospital, the number of people hospitalized for respiratory diseases, especially acute cases, is on the rise.

Many patients with chronic lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are hospitalized for severe exacerbations. In particular, some patients with no history of chronic disease develop severe respiratory symptoms.

A typical case is a 48-year-old female patient in Lap Thach, Vinh Phuc . The patient was hospitalized with symptoms of cough, phlegm and high fever. After testing and X-ray, the results showed extensive consolidation in the left lung. Thanks to active treatment, the patient recovered after a week and was discharged from the hospital.

Another case is a 75-year-old male patient in Ha Hoa, Phu Tho, with a history of high blood pressure. He was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of cough, shortness of breath, and severe inflammation in the left lung. Due to his old age and many underlying diseases, the treatment period lasted up to two weeks.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Huy said that cold weather and high humidity are favorable factors for viruses and bacteria that cause respiratory diseases to develop. Sudden changes in temperature, along with a large difference between day and night, cause the immune system to weaken and become difficult to adapt. This creates conditions for pathogens to attack the body, especially those with underlying medical conditions such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis.

If upper respiratory tract diseases are not well controlled, symptoms can progress to severe sinusitis, pneumonia or even lung abscess.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Huy gave some advice to prevent respiratory diseases during the changing seasons such as vaccination. Accordingly, people should be vaccinated against influenza, pneumococcal and Covid-19, especially the elderly and those with chronic diseases.

Avoid exposing your body to cold air. When going out, wear warm clothes, especially keep your neck, chest and soles of your feet warm. Make sure you eat a nutritious diet and drink enough water. Control underlying diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

When having respiratory symptoms, people should see a doctor instead of using antibiotics on their own or using someone else's prescription to avoid dangerous complications.

With proper preventive measures, you can reduce the risk of respiratory diseases during the changing seasons, protecting the health of yourself and your family.
