The wife silently abandoned her sick husband and young children.
Mr. Cao Nhu The (born in 1991), residing in Liem Hoa village, Trung Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh province, has repeatedly faced misfortunes in his life.
Born into a poor family, after graduating from high school, Mr. The went to Dong Nai province to work as a laborer. In 2011, he got married, and he and his wife had a handsome son, whom they named Cao Gia An.

However, their peaceful life lasted only six years before disaster struck. In 2017, Mr. The discovered he had kidney failure, causing his hands and feet to swell. Life was already difficult, and his illness plunged his wife and children into hardship. A few months later, unable to bear the pressures of life any longer, his wife quietly left, abandoning the sick man and their child, who was not yet six years old.
To pay for dialysis treatment and his children's education, Mr. The did all kinds of jobs, from selling vegetables and soft drinks to lottery tickets and working as a motorbike taxi driver... he did whatever anyone hired him to do, trying his best each day to save every penny.

To survive, Mr. The goes to the hospital three times a week for dialysis (Photo: Tien Thanh).
In 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, life became even more difficult for Mr. The and his son. Their work was suspended, their income decreased, while medical treatment costs increased. Unable to stay in a foreign land with his young child, Mr. The decided to bring his son back to his hometown in Quang Binh.
On the small plot of land left to him by his parents, Mr. The borrowed money to build a temporary house of about 20 square meters, just enough space for a bed, a study desk for his child, and a cooking area. Whenever it rains or is windy, the two of them have to put up a tarp to prevent leaks. To sustain life, Mr. The goes to the hospital three times a week for dialysis.
On days when he wasn't hospitalized, Mr. The would go to the local market and do odd jobs, earning 50,000-70,000 dong if he was lucky. Lately, he's been weak and unable to do heavy work, so fewer people hire him. His condition has worsened, with swollen and scarred hands and feet. Furthermore, he suffers from degenerative spinal disease and fluctuating blood pressure, causing him immense pain.

The dream of a poor student
Mr. The's son, Cao Gia An, is currently studying at Trung Hoa Secondary and High School. Out of love for his sick father and understanding the family's circumstances, An is very well-behaved and hardworking. An is a great source of motivation for Mr. The in his battle against illness.
Coming from a poor family, An almost always went to school on an empty stomach. After school, having a bowl of rice and vegetables or a packet of instant noodles at home was a blessing. Despite the hardships, An was an excellent student.
From grades 1 to 5, An consistently achieved excellent academic results. Her outstanding qualities include her ability to learn, communicate, and sing in English. Furthermore, she excels in subjects like literature, mathematics, life skills, sports, and music compared to her peers.

In the 2022-2023 school year, An won second prize in the district-level English speaking competition with mind maps for elementary school students. An also tutors and helps her classmates, so she is highly regarded by her teachers and friends.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Trung, Gia An's homeroom teacher, recounted that in her recent essay, which received a score of 9, An moved many teachers and classmates to tears, with everyone feeling sorry for her circumstances.
"In that essay, An talked about her family, about her father's serious illness, about her mother who left, the hardships she faced, and her simple dreams. In the essay, An didn't blame her mother but only wished for her mother to return. Reading that essay, I couldn't hold back my tears; it showed me just how much hardship An had endured," Mr. Trung confided.
Not only is An diligent and academically gifted, but he is also a filial son who loves his father dearly. He never loiters around; after school, he rushes home to help his father cook, wash clothes, and care for him when he has a pain attack. An's greatest dream is for his father's condition to improve, for them to have enough to eat, and for him to be able to continue attending school.

"All my friends have both parents, but my mother left and my father is sick, so I feel very sad. Every day I wish my mother would come back to my father and me, and I hope my father gets better soon," An confided.
Speaking about the circumstances of An and her father, Mr. Cao Xuan Duong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Trung Hoa commune, said that they are a poor household in the locality, living in a dilapidated house. Mr. The is a single father raising his child and also suffers from a serious illness, making life extremely difficult.
According to Mr. Duong, to share the burden with An's family, the local authorities have appealed to organizations, associations, and philanthropists for help. However, the support received is insufficient to cover Mr. The's medical expenses and daily costs. Mr. Duong hopes that the community will join hands to help this poor family overcome this difficult period.
