Brazilian President Lula da Silva announced that he will introduce legislation allowing the country to import rice from neighboring Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina, in an effort to lower the high price of the commodity.
The Brazilian government has decided to import rice after prices surged in recent days amid flooding and heavy rains in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, the country's rice granary. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Rio Grande do Sul produces up to 70% of the national rice output, with a record harvest of 7.6 million tons in 2022.
This year's historic floods in the Rio Grande do Sul have killed at least 107 people, left 130 missing, and displaced hundreds of thousands. The Brazilian government has pledged approximately $10 billion to rebuild the flood-ravaged areas in the south of the country.
