| Teacher Ho Khanh An always dedicates his full attention and love to his students. |
Sow seeds of love through simple things.
Mr. Ho Khanh An (born in 1989), a member of the Co Tu ethnic group, is currently a physical education teacher and Head of the Youth Union at Thuong Lo Primary School, Khe Tre commune.
In the early days of teaching, the teacher noticed that many students were absent from school irregularly, or came to class tired because they hadn't eaten breakfast. For children in the highlands, breakfast was sometimes a luxury. This lack of breakfast deeply saddened him. And then, a simple thought became his motivation: "If they had a proper breakfast, perhaps they would come to school more regularly."
In September 2020, the "Breakfast of Love" program was officially launched by teacher Khanh An. Initially, each meal cost only about 6,000 VND, a small amount but enough to give the children a warm breakfast before school. He and his colleagues at the school contributed money to maintain the program.
“Here, the security guards also sell breakfast at the school gate. So I gave them the list of students participating in the program. The students just need to come, mark their names on the list, and then receive their breakfast,” Mr. An shared.
This approach is both simple and effective. No money is given, no complicated procedures are needed, and the children can eat breakfast naturally, without feeling self-conscious.
The journey of spreading awareness and the moments of silence that need support.
What started as a small initiative at school, "Breakfast of Love," gradually gained widespread recognition. As the story spread, more friends, colleagues, and benefactors joined hands to support it. Thanks to this, the value of each meal increased to 10,000 VND, giving the children better choices.
On average, the program supports about 20-30 students each year, mainly those from ethnic minority groups. To date, more than 150 children have benefited from these simple yet meaningful breakfasts.
According to Mr. Tran Binh, Principal of Thuong Lo Primary School, the "Breakfast of Love" program not only provides practical support for disadvantaged students but also creates a positive ripple effect within the school.
“Mr. Khanh An is a very dedicated teacher, always close to and caring towards his students. Besides his professional work, he regularly participates in charitable activities, proactively connecting with benefactors to support underprivileged students,” Mr. Binh shared.
What makes Mr. An happiest is not how many more meals are given away, but seeing more students come to class each morning, their faces brighter after a hot meal.
However, the journey wasn't always smooth sailing. Funding was unstable, and there were times when the program had to be temporarily suspended for one or two months. During those times, Mr. An would busily call for and connect with others to maintain support. Sometimes it was old friends, other times it was philanthropists who happened to learn about the story at Thuong Lo Primary School.
Not content with just one school, Mr. An also supports other schools in the area when asked for help. “I hope that, from this model, teachers in other schools can develop similar programs.” That’s how the “Breakfast of Love” program spreads its message – not just through meals, but also through inspiration and a spirit of sharing.
