The songwriting competition commemorating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Hai Phong has brought a "breath of fresh air" to music about the port city. After three months of launching, the Organizing Committee received 128 works from professional and amateur musicians in and outside the city, reflecting deep love for the beauty of Hai Phong's land and people, and praising the great achievements in the renovation, construction, and development of the homeland.

The judging panel selected 9 outstanding songs to be awarded prizes at the Gala Night on October 13th, including 5 authors from other provinces and cities: "Hai Phong Glorious and Shining" by Huynh Tan Phat (Dak Lak), "Hai Phong Moving Forward" by Nguyen Thi Chinh ( Hanoi ), "My Hai Phong" by Nguyen Van Dat (Hung Yen), "Remembering the City of Flame Trees" by Le Hai Dang (Ho Chi Minh City), and "Hai Phong - A Rising Wave" by Nguyen Dinh Nghi (Lam Dong).

There are four authors from Hai Phong , including: "Returning to Hai Phong" by Nguyen Duy Tan - Le Van Hung, "The Waves of Hai Phong" by Vu Manh Cuong - Tran Nhat Minh, "Hai Phong - Continuing the Epic" by Nguyen Duc Hoai, and "70 Years of Hai Phong Liberation" by Nguyen Duy Thai.

Songs about Hai Phong were performed at the Gala awarding prizes for the best songs commemorating 70 years of Hai Phong's liberation.

The works showcased a diverse range of songwriting styles, from deeply emotional lyrical songs to youthful, vibrant tunes, reflecting the spirit of a rapidly transforming industrial city.

Among them, the song "Hai Phong, Glorious and Shining" by composer Huynh Tan Phat impressed with its stirring melody and lyrics affirming the city's position as a major industrial, service, and seaport center of the country. "Hai Phong was already familiar, and now, after merging with Hai Duong, the affection has doubled. It is from this closeness that I wrote this song with all my sincere feelings, hoping the city will continue to soar and reach greater heights," the author shared.

Composer Nguyen Duy Thai presented the song "70 Years of Liberation of Hai Phong," recreating a glorious historical journey and evoking pride in generations of the city's residents. The composer shared: "Competitions like this create a vibrant atmosphere and inspire creativity, giving Hai Phong composers the opportunity to interact with colleagues nationwide, thereby creating valuable works that resonate with the public."

The Gala Night was an opportunity for 9 representative songs to be performed on a grand stage, affirming the vitality of contemporary music, and also serving as a profound tribute to the hometown city on the occasion of its 70th anniversary of liberation.

Giving wings to musical dreams

Over the years, Hai Phong has regularly organized songwriting competitions about the city, becoming a prestigious platform and a gathering place for many generations of musicians from both within and outside the locality.

According to musician Duy Thai, Chairman of the Hai Phong Music Association, this initiative to encourage composition "brings a new atmosphere and spirit to those in the profession; through interaction and refinement, it creates inspiration and passion for composition."

The songs in this year's competition are youthful and energetic.

These competitions not only discover quality works but also nurture a love of music among the younger generation, opening up opportunities for new songs to enter the real world.

Composer Quang Vinh, President of the Hanoi Music Association and Chairman of the judging panel, commented: “The trend towards a more youthful style is becoming clearer. Music about Hai Phong is becoming more modern, with vibrant rhythms that harmonize with industrial life. This is a welcome sign, especially for a city with a strong identity like Hai Phong.” He also noted the application of technology in composition: AI can assist but cannot replace human emotion. This competition affirms the viewpoint of prioritizing genuine creativity, valuing artistic value and local identity.

Launched from June to August 31, 2025, the competition received 128 entries from professional and amateur musicians and composers nationwide, expressing deep love for the resilient port city of Hai Phong. The competition is a cultural activity with profound political and spiritual significance, contributing to the dissemination of Hai Phong's revolutionary traditions, history, and culture; while also enriching the city's musical repertoire and promoting the image of "Hai Phong - A dynamic and integrated City of Music."
