Serious landslide and subsidence occurred in Cai Nuoc commune ( Ca Mau ).

According to reporters, along the 3.5m wide asphalt road next to the Dong Hung canal, which is less than 3km long, there are 5 points of road subsidence spanning approximately 320km, directly affecting the travel and business activities of local residents.

According to Mr. Nghiem Thanh Mien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cai Nuoc commune, the most serious subsidence point is nearly 100 meters long. The initial cause identified is that the Dong Hung canal has a deep channel, is affected by high tidal fluctuations, and the strong current creates significant pressure, leading to erosion and subsidence.

Vice Chairman Nghiem Thanh Mien also stated that the People's Committee of Cai Nuoc commune has directed specialized departments to implement safety measures in the subsidence area, including cordoning off the area and installing warning signs to restrict access by people and vehicles; installing temporary traffic restrictions in the area and guiding people to use appropriate alternative routes. Simultaneously, temporary remedial measures are being implemented by reinforcing the soil and using local timber to address the subsidence.

According to local residents, this is a vital road connecting five hamlets, and the serious subsidence in some sections is affecting the movement of people and students going to school. Many subsided sections have cut off traffic, forcing residents of some hamlets to take detours, wasting time and money.

According to Tran Ut Nho, Head of the People's Committee of Kinh Lon hamlet, Cai Nuoc commune, the road still has many cracks and the risk of subsidence remains. Local residents have requested that the local government and relevant agencies promptly implement long-term solutions to ensure the safety of people traveling, trading, and students going to school.

Numerous sections of the road have subsided, posing a danger to road users.

“Students from grades 10 to 12 attending school in Cai Nuoc commune center are forced to take a longer detour of about 10km. To be on time for class, they have to wake up around 4-5 am to prepare. Besides that, the buying, selling, and transportation of agricultural products by the local people is also difficult because the road has subsided, cutting off traffic,” Mr. Tran Ut Nho shared.

Earning a living daily by selling vegetables and fruits from a mobile stall, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyen (Cai Nuoc commune) said: "Even in sunny weather, it's difficult to navigate the temporary road through the subsided area. In the rainy season, the road becomes slippery and prone to falls. I, along with the local people, hope that the local government and relevant agencies will soon find a solution to ensure safe travel for the residents."

Local authorities in Cai Nuoc commune (Ca Mau province) are surveying and developing plans to address landslides and subsidence.

According to Nghiêm Thanh Miền, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cái Nước commune, many new cracks continue to appear along the Đông Hưng canal, indicating a complex and ongoing risk of landslides. With limited financial resources, the People's Committee can only temporarily repair the canal to allow residents to travel on foot or by motorbike.

In the long term, the commune has proposed to the Provincial People's Committee that the Department of Construction, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Environment and other relevant units, provide appropriate technical and professional support solutions that are compliant with regulations and achieve sustainable quality and effectiveness, creating favorable conditions for people to live and conduct business with peace of mind in the area.

According to To Hoai Phuong, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ca Mau province, the situation of landslides and subsidence in the province is quite complex; to date, the province has 5 serious landslide and subsidence points.

The cause of the subsidence has been identified as the deep channel bed and the high tidal difference causing erosion.

Regarding remedial solutions, the immediate approach involves reinforcing the black soil and using local timber to treat the landslide areas (using soft embankment solutions such as coconut piles, mangrove piles, geotextiles, gabions, etc., with stone mats at the base of the embankment extending towards the river) to ensure convenient access for residents and students. For long-term solutions, it is necessary to construct a sturdy reinforced concrete embankment at the landslide and subsidence site, and a soft embankment along the riverbank to protect residents in the affected area.

According to Mr. To Hoai Phuong, the Department of Agriculture and Environment proposed that the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Finance consider providing financial support to the People's Committees of communes and wards affected by landslides and subsidence to carry out temporary remediation at the affected areas, thereby creating favorable conditions for people to live peacefully in these areas. At the same time, they requested approval for investment in the landslide and subsidence areas according to prescribed procedures.
