Although jackfruit prices have edged up slightly in recent days, increasing by about 1,000-2,000 VND/kg compared to before, the overall price level remains low, insufficient to help farmers reduce production costs. In many key jackfruit-growing areas of Dong Thap province, the price of Thai jackfruit and red-fleshed jackfruit currently ranges from only 5,000-9,000 VND/kg for grade A; smaller, mixed-grade jackfruit is only about 2,000-4,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Tran Van Bung, from Thanh Phu commune, Dong Thap province, who cultivates over 1.2 hectares of Thai jackfruit intercropped with durian, said that each harvest yields about 1 ton of jackfruit. However, with current prices, selling the fruit barely covers production costs.
According to Mr. Bung, since the beginning of the year, jackfruit prices have consistently been low, forcing many households to sell only a small amount or separate the segments to sell to facilities that process jackfruit into dried jackfruit in order to recoup their costs.
Many jackfruit growers say that the prolonged price drop is causing difficulties for farmers due to increased costs of fertilizers and pesticides, while sales are slow.
According to jackfruit traders in the area, this is the longest period of low jackfruit prices in many years. Although purchasing activities have picked up again, consumption remains slow, and many farmers are reluctant to sell because the more they sell, the more losses they incur.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, owner of a jackfruit purchasing depot in Hiep Duc commune, said that currently, the depot buys about 3-4 tons of jackfruit of all kinds each day, a significant decrease compared to before. The prolonged low jackfruit prices have caused some households to cut down their fruit or switch to other crops.

According to experts, the main reason for the sharp drop in jackfruit prices is the difficulty in exporting to China. Recently, the prolonged testing for cadmium and yellow oxide levels has slowed down customs clearance. Some shipments have been flagged or returned, causing a surge in supply to the domestic market and putting significant pressure on prices.
Faced with the risk of losses, many businesses and purchasing centers have become more cautious in their purchasing activities. Currently, purchasing activities have basically returned to normal; however, due to slow consumption in the Chinese market, jackfruit prices have not yet improved.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, the province currently has over 25,680 hectares of jackfruit; of which, about 20,500 hectares are bearing fruit with an estimated production of 437,000 tons per year. Currently, the locality has 180 jackfruit growing area codes covering approximately 6,000 hectares and 110 packaging facility codes serving export. Notably, the estimated harvest in May is about 38,000 tons, and in June about 30,000 tons.
Faced with the sharp drop in durian and jackfruit prices and difficulties in consumption, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province has sent a letter to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment requesting support and guidance in strengthening the sampling and testing of durian and jackfruit for export.
Simultaneously, the province is focusing on solutions to improve the quality of fruit trees, with a focus on controlling cadmium levels, promoting the establishment of new planting areas, and closely monitoring planting area codes.
In addition, the provincial agricultural sector also advises businesses and raw material areas to proactively control the quality of linked production areas according to planting area codes; classify raw material areas according to the level of risk of cadmium residue to develop appropriate procurement plans.
For farmers, it is necessary to adhere to safe farming practices, use fertilizers and pesticides according to instructions; and avoid using inputs of unknown origin that may pose a risk of heavy metal residue.
According to the agricultural sector, in the long term, improving the quality of raw material areas, strictly controlling cultivation processes, and expanding consumption markets are important solutions for jackfruit to recover its value and help people stabilize production.
