Bulgarian singer wins big at the 70th Eurovision Song Contest.

On the night of May 16th, Bulgarian pop singer Darina Yotova (stage name Dara) won the 70th edition of the European Television Singing Contest (Eurovision) after beating representatives from 24 other countries participating in the world's largest live televised music competition.

Bulgaria missed out on the last three Eurovision Song Contests but won the crown in Vienna, Austria. Dara, the 27-year-old singer, wasn't among the favorites before the show began but made a splash during Eurovision week with her energetic and elaborately choreographed dance performance to the upbeat song "Bangaranga".

Initially, singer Noam Bettan was expected to win for Israel with her song "Michelle" thanks to high scores in a televised public poll across Europe.

However, when the televised voting results for Bulgaria changed, singer Dara ultimately won with 516 points, leading Israel by 173 points. This is the second consecutive year that the Israeli representative has finished second. Following them were Romania with 296 points, Australia with 287 points, Italy with 281 points, and Finland with 279 points.

Speaking at a press conference after her victory, singer Dara expressed her desire to bring something new and unique to the audience, "something unexpected."

In a Facebook post, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov also welcomed singer Dara's victory. With this win, Bulgaria will be the next country to host Eurovision.

A total of 25 countries participated in the Eurovision final, with Denmark opening the show and Austria performing the final act.

Representatives from France, Greece, Denmark, and Australia were highly rated, but did not achieve high rankings.

Each year, Eurovision attracts over 170 million viewers worldwide via television and billions more views across digital platforms.

Throughout its seven decades of existence, the European televised singing competition, Eurovision, has helped shape popular culture, fuel social debate and European development, but has also reflected many political divisions.

This year, Israel's participation amidst ongoing fighting in Gaza led to a boycott of the competition by several European countries.
