According to the Straits Times , a goldfish that "drives" has made it into the Guinness World Records after its owner built a special vehicle specifically for the species.
Dutch engineer Thomas de Wolf designed a four-wheeled vehicle with an integrated water tank for his pet – a goldfish named Blub. The vehicle operates thanks to Blub's movement inside the tank.
This achievement was recorded on the Italian television program Lo Show dei Record on January 23rd, making Blub the goldfish that traveled the furthest distance in a minute using a motion-sensing controlled vehicle.
According to Guinness' rules, the goldfish needs to move at least 5 meters in one minute to be recognized for the record. Any direction of movement counts, including backward movement.
The four-wheeled vehicle, custom-built by Mr. de Wolf, incorporates a water tank for the fish. The system operates using motion-sensing cameras: whichever direction Blub swims, the vehicle moves in that direction. However, the device works most effectively with bright red fish – which are easier to identify.
Sharing his idea, de Wolf said he wanted to make the often monotonous work of engineering more interesting, while also demonstrating the potential applications of sensor technology in everyday life – even for purposes that aren't too "serious".
"My daily work is quite monotonous, so I wanted to create something that would bring joy to people, to make 'serious' work more interesting," said de Wolf.
In the future, this engineer hopes to develop technology to assist people with mobility difficulties. However, he faces a more challenging "problem" right now. "How am I going to explain to Blub that he just set a world record?", he joked.
