When did other countries start switching to E10 gasoline?

While many are concerned about Vietnam's mandatory nationwide transition to E10 bioethanol fuel from June 1, 2026, looking at the world, this type of fuel has been widely used for a long time with a high level of blending.

US and Europe: Ethanol has become the default standard.

In the US, E10 gasoline has become the default standard, accounting for over 95% of gasoline sold on the market following amendments to the Clean Air Act of 1990 and the RFS program.

In the US, E10 gasoline and "pure" gasoline (with little or no ethanol) used to coexist.

Since 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has permitted the use of E15 gasoline for cars manufactured in 2001 or later, expanding its sale year-round since 2019. In 2025 and 2026, the U.S. government plans to further expand E15 nationwide, especially in the Midwest states.

In the European Union (EU), the Renewable Energy Directive (RED I) of 2009 serves as the foundation for promoting biofuels.

Germany was one of the first major markets to widely roll out E10 gasoline starting in January 2011. Despite initial consumer resistance, E10 has now become common gasoline in Germany after the government and car manufacturers confirmed its safety for vehicles manufactured after 2000.

Asia is proactively transforming, with Southeast Asia leading the way decisively.

China began promoting ethanol gasoline in the late 2000s and announced plans to expand E10 nationwide before 2020. Despite uneven implementation due to supply constraints and costs, China maintained pilot programs in many provinces and cities. By 2025, the country will issue a new E10 standard (GB 18351-2025) containing 8-12% ethanol, officially effective from July 1, 2026.

Thailand is one of the strongest markets promoting biofuels.

In Southeast Asia, many countries have implemented biofuels earlier and more aggressively than Vietnam. Thailand introduced E10 to the market in 2001, with tax incentives from 2007-2008. Since 2020, E20 gasoline (containing 20% ethanol) has become the most common "standard gasoline" at gas stations in the country; pure ethanol gasoline has almost disappeared. In addition, Thailand has also developed B7/B10/B20 biodiesel.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is renowned for its palm oil-based biofuel program. The country has been deploying B35 biodiesel since 2023, upgrading to B40 in 2025 and aiming for B50 in 2026-2027. For bioethanol, the Indonesian government announced plans to adopt E10 in 2025 and aims to make it mandatory on a large scale from 2027-2028.
