However, for those fortunate enough to escape the clutches of death, post-stroke care is extremely important. Many complications and aftereffects of stroke are common, and whether or not their condition improves over time depends entirely on the severity of the disease, the treatment process, and their ability to recover.
According to Dr. Huynh Thi Kim Lien, Deputy Director in charge of operations at the Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation Hospital of Ca Mau province, "Rehabilitation is extremely important for patients who unfortunately suffer a stroke. Therefore, after treatment, patients need to start rehabilitation early in an environment with rich movement and activities, with the long-term goal of helping stroke patients perform daily activities as independently as possible with basic skills such as eating, dressing, walking, etc."
Typically, in the post-stroke period, patients are at high risk of complications due to immobility, such as muscle weakness, respiratory problems (respiratory infections, pneumonia), pressure ulcers, reduced range of motion, contractures, decreased overall health (reduced cardiopulmonary endurance), deep vein thrombosis in the lower extremities, pulmonary embolism, and osteoporosis. Therefore, for stroke patients requiring special care in a convenient environment, family members should always prioritize helping stroke patients independently perform daily activities. However, this process requires perseverance and adherence to many principles recommended by doctors, with the top priority being preventing respiratory complications; encouraging patients to actively exercise in the early mornings; and addressing weakness or hemiplegia…
A crucial aspect of stroke patient care is maintaining proper posture. This promotes optimal recovery, as many stroke patients may experience complications such as respiratory infections, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, reduced joint mobility, or thrombotic complications. Furthermore, consistent support, encouragement, and emotional support are essential for faster recovery.
Mr. Le Minh Duong, 58 years old, residing in Coi 6A hamlet, Da Bac commune, was fortunate to be saved from a sudden stroke more than a year ago. Thanks to his family's consistent adherence to basic principles of post-stroke care, his health has significantly improved. Mr. Duong shared: “In the initial period after being discharged from the hospital, due to feelings of shame and inferiority, feeling like a burden to my family, I often fell into a state of anxiety, fatigue, and even depression. However, thanks to the kind encouragement, visits, and active support from my family, I was able to live optimistically and happily with everyone. From then on, I always tried to exercise more, and this contributed to my faster recovery.”
Therefore, given the high mortality rate, high recurrence rate, and severe disability, post-stroke rehabilitation to help patients return to their daily lives as best as possible, as well as adherence to preventive treatment measures to avoid recurrent stroke, is an extremely important and necessary process after patients are discharged from the hospital.
