"This is the depth of culture," said Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung at the first International Conference on Rural Tourism of the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) in Quang Nam on December 10.

According to him, tourists want to experience and explore the beauty of Vietnamese life and the friendly and hospitable people. Vietnam, with 70% of its population living in rural areas, is identified as "a land of potential for developing agricultural and rural tourism."

For sustainable development, he believes it must start with local culture, preserving the cultural identity of each village, and from there, creating products and improving product quality. Vietnam has successfully developed rural tourism products in some areas, with community-based tourism, ecotourism, traditional craft village tourism, and culinary tourism.

However, agricultural and rural tourism in Vietnam still faces many challenges and difficulties due to the remote location of the villages. To attract tourists, a range of issues need to be addressed, including infrastructure, policies, product innovation, and ensuring the preservation of unique and distinctive characteristics.

Another solution is to apply information technology and digital transformation to connect villages and use this tool to promote the image of the country and its destinations. "The only way is through information technology and more systematic and professional training of human resources, not the spontaneous approach we've seen recently," Mr. Hung said.

Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long stated that rural tourism is becoming increasingly popular and developing. This model promotes economic transformation, reduces the development gap between rural and urban areas, and promotes and celebrates the unique values of the locality.

"Developing local specialty products, traditional crafts, and promoting rural tourism based on preserving and promoting local culture," Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long said about one of the orientations for rural tourism.

Many localities in Vietnam have successfully exploited their strengths, developing diverse and attractive rural destination systems. Among them, many tourist villages have been recognized according to ASEAN criteria. In particular, Tan Hoa village (Quang Binh), Thai Hai village (Thai Nguyen), and Tra Que village (Quang Nam) have been honored by the United Nations Tourism Organization as the Best Tourist Villages.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the need to promote international cooperation and strengthen public-private partnerships in rural tourism development. "Vietnam is ready to continue actively cooperating with the international community and the United Nations Tourism Organization to implement new initiatives and approaches to develop rural tourism according to the motto 'one village, one product'; 'one citizen, one tourism ambassador'; 'one locality, one unique tourism product'," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
