A happy ending for Jamie Vardy

At King Power Stadium on May 18, Jamie Vardy made his mark with a classy goal after an assist from James Justin.

This was his 200th goal in his 500th appearance for Leicester City. More importantly, this milestone came exactly 13 years since he left semi-professional team Fleetwood Town to begin his magical journey with the “Foxes”.

Immediately after the match, Leicester paid tribute to Vardy, calling him the greatest player in the club's history. His decision to leave the club as a free agent after this season also marked the end of a glorious journey - where Vardy went from an unknown striker to an immortal icon at King Power.

The former England international was instrumental in Leicester's legendary Premier League triumph in 2016 and played a key role in their maiden FA Cup triumph in 2021. Not only that, Vardy has also shown absolute loyalty to Leicester.

After winning the Premier League in 2016, the striker wearing the number 9 shirt turned down all offers from big clubs - where Vardy could have further developed his career with the opportunity to play in the Champions League and further win more titles. Instead, he extended his contract with Leicester and said:

“I feel like Leicester is where I belong. I believe in the club and the path we are on.”

The culmination of the 2022-2023 season saw Leicester relegated to the Championship. Instead of leaving to continue playing at the highest level, Vardy decided to stay and help the team find a way back to the Premier League. Vardy's efforts were rewarded when he and Leicester secured promotion to the Premier League this season.

Despite being on the other side of the career hill, Vardy has no intention of stopping. In an interview with Sky Sports earlier this month, he affirmed:

“I never doubted myself. That's who I am. Football is a world of surprises - you never know what's going to happen. I'll keep playing until my legs give out. But at the moment, they're fine.”

This season, Vardy has been a regular in Leicester’s squad, making 35 Premier League appearances, scoring nine goals and providing four assists. Although his efforts have not helped the Foxes stay in the top flight, Jamie Vardy’s legacy at the club will forever be an indelible mark.
