The iPhone 17 Pro is still considered the benchmark for mobile photography. However, the high-end Android segment is facing strong competition, with the Oppo Find X9 Pro being a standout. This device has garnered attention thanks to its high-quality triple rear camera setup, especially the 200-megapixel telephoto sensor, which delivers impressively sharp zoom capabilities and high-quality wide-angle shots. Photographer Andrew Lanxon from CNET believes the Oppo Find X9 Pro is a direct competitor, ready to challenge Apple's leading position in smartphone photography. Photo: Prakhar Khanna/CNET.

With a simple photo taken at the train tracks using the main camera, both phones demonstrate good exposure. However, the photo from the Oppo Find X9 Pro (right) shows superior color reproduction. The bricks on the wall have a warmer, more natural tone, while the iPhone 17 Pro's photo (left) has a slight purple tint. Notably, the colors in the Oppo Find X9 Pro's photo are more vibrant yet realistic, without being overly exaggerated. Photo: Andrew Lanxon.

When zooming in on the wall details, the grout lines between the bricks in the Oppo Find X9 Pro image (right) appear sharper thanks to the processing. However, the bricks themselves lose significant detail, almost appearing "polished" due to the overly aggressive noise reduction algorithm. In contrast, the image from the iPhone 17 Pro preserves the surface detail of the material more realistically. Photo: Andrew Lanxon.

In a close-up zoom test of a photo with a colorful hedge and foliage, the image from the Oppo Find X9 Pro (right) showed a significant lack of detail compared to the iPhone 17 Pro (left). This is a surprising result, especially considering the overall sharpness in normal shooting. It is unclear whether this is due to image processing issues or lens quality, but it is clear that the Oppo Find X9 Pro has revealed a weakness in its ability to reproduce detail when zooming. In indoor shooting conditions using the main camera, the Oppo Find X9 Pro (Right) clearly has the advantage. The Oppo's image has better brightness and richer, more saturated colors while maintaining harmony. However, similar to previous tests, the image still shows some processing intervention: some areas are sharpened, while others have reduced surface detail. Overall, the Oppo Find X9 Pro's image is still visually superior. Similarly, when switching to the ultra-wide lens, the Oppo Find X9 Pro continues to demonstrate its superiority. In a bright outdoor setting, both phones demonstrated balanced exposure capabilities. However, the Oppo Find X9 Pro's (right) photo was rated higher for its warm and realistic tones. The iPhone 17 Pro's (left) photo tended to adjust the white balance towards cooler tones to compensate for the yellow hues of the scenery, resulting in distorted colors. Conversely, Oppo produced a more realistic image with superior quality. Photo: Andrew Lanxon.

In a photograph of a river scene, the image from the Oppo Find X9 Pro (right) shows significantly superior brightness and vibrancy. However, this vibrancy is somewhat excessive: the sky is a little too blue, and the buildings in the center of the frame are also overexposed. Even so, Lanxon still rated the Oppo's image higher than the iPhone 17 Pro, which looked pale when placed side-by-side. Photo: Andrew Lanxon.

When the zoom capabilities were pushed to their maximum default levels (iPhone 8x, Oppo 6x), the results showed a clear and unnatural difference. The biggest difference lay in color balance: the iPhone 17 Pro image (left) leaned towards a blue tone, while the Oppo Find X9 Pro image (right) tended towards a reddish-purple tint. Lanxon concluded that both devices overprocessed the images, making the colors look unrealistic. Notably, the Oppo Find X9 Pro image showed excessive digital sharpening, resulting in stiff and unnatural details. Image: Andrew Lanxon.

In night mode and backlit conditions, the iPhone 17 Pro (left) appears brighter, but the Oppo Find X9 Pro (right) is rated higher thanks to its superior contrast. This high contrast effectively controls glare from light sources, while also significantly reproducing sharper details on the building's facade. Photo: Andrew Lanxon.

In the selfie test, both phones showed different processing approaches. However, the Oppo Find X9 Pro (Right) clearly won: the photo was significantly sharper, skin tones looked more natural, and the orange jacket color was accurately reproduced. Although the background had a slight blue tint, the overall image quality of the Oppo was still considered far superior to the iPhone 17 Pro (Left). Photo: Andrew Lanxon.
