Be vigilant against theft at the end of the year.

The end of the year is when theft and robbery activities increase. People's complacency inadvertently "helps" criminals carry out their thefts successfully.

A recent incident illustrates the brazenness of theft at the end of the year. On the night of December 11th, Mrs. NTT (75 years old), residing in Dong Thanh hamlet, Tan Hiep commune, was sleeping when she was suddenly attacked by Nguyen Van Thu (39 years old), a resident of the same locality, who secretly broke into her house and electrocuted her, causing her to become disoriented. The assailant then used a blanket and pillow to cover Mrs. T's face, restraining her and preventing her from calling for help. Faced with the assailant's aggression, Mrs. T pretended to be unconscious. The assailant searched her, stealing her belongings, including 5 taels of 24K gold and 3 million VND in cash, before quickly escaping. Immediately after the assailant left, Mrs. T reported the incident to the police.

Another incident also illustrates the audacity of vehicle theft criminals at the end of the year. In mid-December 2025, the Tan Chau Ward Police discovered Duong Tan Linh (27 years old), residing in Phu Loc Hamlet, Cho Vam Commune, stealing a motorbike in Dong Thap Province and bringing it to Tan Chau Ward for resale. Notably, the suspect has four previous convictions for theft.

According to authorities, some criminal groups operate in a mobile manner, moving through many localities. In many remote villages, public lighting is limited, and roads are deserted at night, creating favorable conditions for criminals to act. Many thefts are only discovered the following morning, after the perpetrators have left the area. The complacency of the people is also a reason why criminals have opportunities. Ms. BTH, residing in Don Dong hamlet, Vinh Thuan commune, shared: “In the countryside, the lifestyle is relaxed, so I often leave my motorbike in front of the house. Recently, my electric bicycle was stolen, and I realized I need to be more vigilant.”

Recently, in some localities, there has been a surge in electrical wire theft, causing power grid safety issues and disrupting people's lives. On December 18th, Chau Doc Ward Police arrested Huynh Thanh Hao and Nguyen Van Thang. During questioning, the two suspects confessed to cutting and stealing electrical wires, extracting the copper cores to sell for money to buy drugs for personal use. It was revealed that both had previously been sent to compulsory drug rehabilitation centers multiple times. Chau Doc Ward Police urge residents to raise their awareness of protecting their property, especially property that uses electrical wires.

Thanks to increased night patrols, combined with the proactive efforts of the people, from the beginning of 2025 to the present, only 2 theft cases have occurred in Dong Hoa commune, a significant decrease compared to previous years. This is a positive sign, showing the effectiveness of the coordination between law enforcement and the people in maintaining local security and order. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hon - Head of Dong Hoa Commune Police - said that theft crimes often increase during the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year) because people are busy and lack vigilance. "Many incidents occur not because the perpetrators are too sophisticated, but because people are careless, leaving doors unlocked, leaving property unattended, or not checking the safety of their surroundings before going to sleep. Households with elderly people or women living alone need to be even more vigilant," Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hon emphasized.

Neighborhood self-governance groups and night patrol forces continue to intensify inspections and maintain a strong presence in their areas to promptly detect and prevent crime. Local police recommend that each family install anti-theft locks and security cameras in front of their homes; and contact the police immediately if they spot any suspicious strangers in the area. The vigilance and self-protection awareness of each individual is a crucial "barrier" contributing to maintaining security and order, helping every family celebrate Tet safely and peacefully.
