In 2026, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will organize three independent exams: Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language. For the Foreign Language exam, candidates can register for one of the following languages: English, French, German, Japanese, or Korean (candidates may register for a foreign language different from the one they are studying at their junior high school).
The Mathematics and Literature exams are essay-based, with a time limit of 120 minutes per exam. The Foreign Language exam is multiple-choice, with a time limit of 60 minutes; multiple exam codes are used in each exam room to ensure that no two adjacent candidates have the same code. Candidates answer on a multiple-choice answer sheet; the exams are graded using computer software.
The entrance exam for 10th grade will consist of questions that align with the learning objectives and goals of the lower secondary education level as outlined in the 2018 General Education Program, primarily focusing on the 9th grade curriculum.
According to the plan of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the enrollment confirmation period (online or in person) is from June 25-27. Successful candidates will submit their admission documents from July 4-6.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training notes that the eligibility requirement is that students must have a place of residence in Hanoi (instead of their permanent residence as before).
Adjusting the score difference when considering applications between different preferences.
This year, each student applying to non-specialized public schools can register a maximum of 3 preferences (NV1, NV2, NV3) of any kind. If they are not admitted to NV1, they will be considered for NV2 (with an admission score at least 0.5 points higher than the NV1 cutoff score). If they are not admitted to NV2, they will be considered for NV3 (with a cutoff score at least 1 point higher than the NV1 cutoff score).
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, this year's early announcement of exam subjects and early exam organization aims to reduce pressure, anxiety, and waiting for students and parents.
This year, the Department has also removed the requirement for permanent residence (household registration) when registering for public high schools, as in previous years, aiming for enrollment across administrative boundaries, increasing educational opportunities for students in the city, and promoting equal and fair education.
By eliminating the designated enrollment zones, students can register for a maximum of three preferences at any public high school, ensuring they match the student's/parent's abilities and circumstances, thus facilitating the registration process and increasing the chances of being admitted according to their preferences.
The Department also adjusted the difference in admission scores (reducing them by 0.5 and 1 point) between different preferences, increasing students' chances of being admitted to their registered preferences.
At the same time, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training added a new exam format for History and Geography (for specialized classes) which is a combination of essay and multiple-choice questions (instead of just essay as in the previous year).
