Despite beating Leeds 3-0 in the final round of the Premier League, "The Hammers" were still relegated after rivals Tottenham's 1-0 victory over Everton.
This result leaves West Ham finishing in 18th place with 42 points and officially returning to the Championship for the first time since 2012. This is considered a major shock for the London club, especially since they had once harbored ambitions of becoming a new force in English football after moving to London Stadium.
West Ham's tragedy is made even more bitter by internal rifts in the dressing room. According to The Athletic , center-back Jean-Clair Todibo had a heated argument with manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the 1-3 defeat to Newcastle in the penultimate round of matches.
In that match, Todibo was substituted off in the 25th minute to make way for striker Taty Castellanos. This decision angered the French defender. Initially, he complained to goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa before directly confronting coach Santo.
The controversy quickly spiraled out of control. Sources reported that Todibo declared he would “never play for him again” if Santo remained in charge of West Ham. As a result, the former OGC Nice star was dropped from the squad for the match against Leeds.
Amidst the threat of relegation, West Ham are reportedly looking to sell a number of players to balance their finances. Those who could leave the club include Konstantinos Mavropanos, Crysencio Summerville, and Mateus Fernandes.
