According to Neowin, over a year ago, CD Projekt RED shared that a new The Witcher game was in development at the studio. Later, further information revealed that the company was planning an entirely new trilogy, described as "a story-driven open -world RPG building upon the legacy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ." Now, as 2024 approaches, development on the project is progressing significantly.
The company's latest earnings report reveals that nearly half of the studio's development force, around 330 employees, are currently working on the sequel to The Witcher (the Polaris project). CEO Adam Kiciński hopes this number will increase to 400 by mid-2024 when the development team for the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion arrives. However, the release date for the RPG project titled Polaris remains undisclosed.
Over 300 developers from CD Projekt RED are working on the new The Witcher project.
The previous main trilogy concluded in 2015 with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . The new trilogy will feature a new Witcher from a different school, based on initial teaser images showing a medallion entirely different from Geralt's iconic Wolf School medallion.
CD Projekt RED is also switching to Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 for all of its future projects, replacing REDengine which previously powered most of its games. Upcoming projects from the studio include a new The Witcher trilogy, a remake of the original The Witcher, and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 .
Nearly 10 years after its release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is expected to receive official modifiers next year. With CD Projekt now fully transitioning to Unreal Engine 5, it seems the studio wants to announce and open up REDengine 3 for the community to explore.
