On May 22nd, AS conducted an online poll on Modric's future at the Bernabeu. The results showed that out of a total of 15,882 votes, 74.8% of fans wanted Real Madrid to extend Modric's contract, while only 25.2% opposed it.
Modric expressed his desire to continue playing for Real Madrid, while also aiming to participate in the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. However, on May 22nd, the midfielder wrote a letter confirming his departure from the Bernabeu.
"The moment I never wanted to come has arrived. This Saturday (May 24th), I will play my last game at the Bernabeu," Modric wrote. "Playing for Real Madrid has changed my life, both as a player and as a person. I am proud to have been a part of one of the most successful periods in the history of this great club."
Modric is willing to take a pay cut to continue contributing to Real Madrid. However, the club's management wants to revamp the midfield with younger players, forcing Modric to find a new club this summer.
Since joining Real Madrid in 2012 for €35 million from Tottenham, Modric has become an indispensable part of the Royal team's squad. He has won numerous titles, including six Champions League titles.
Despite turning 40 this September, Modric still plays a crucial role at Real Madrid. According to Whoscored , Modric creates the most scoring opportunities per 90 minutes (0.88), more than any other midfielder in the top 5 European leagues.
