Taking care of the lives of the Co ethnic minority people.

Tam My commune currently has 325 households with 1,227 people of the Co ethnic minority living there. For many years, the Party and the State have paid special attention to caring for the lives of ethnic minorities, achieving many positive results.

Located on the border with Quang Ngai province and the former Nam Tra My district, the mountainous commune of Tam My was established by merging three communes: Tam My Dong, Tam My Tay, and Tam Tra. The locality is home to two ethnic groups, the Kinh and Co, with the Co people concentrated in three villages: Phu Tho , Phu Tan, and Phu Tu, formerly part of Tam Tra commune.

In recent years, in accordance with the policies and guidelines of the Party and the State, the locality has implemented many solutions to develop the socio -economic conditions of the Co ethnic minority region.

In just 5 years (2021-2025), the State invested over 11 billion VND in 3 villages inhabited by the Co ethnic minority to build 14 rural roads with a total length of over 2km; and 47 irrigation works… As a result, the percentage of rural roads, alleys, and hamlets in the Co ethnic minority area that have been concreted has reached 90%.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dang, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Tam My commune, in terms of economics, the government and specialized agencies, along with the Fatherland Front and mass organizations, have provided financial support and technical guidance to help the Co ethnic minority people transform their crop and livestock structures, resulting in relatively high economic efficiency.

In agricultural production, along with continuing to guide farmers in rice cultivation, local authorities support models for mushroom farming, pepper cultivation, and poultry breeding.

Simultaneously, livelihood support for the poor was provided through 5 fruit garden models for 6 households, a Dong Tao chicken farming model for 3 households, a revolving cattle farming model for 7 households, support for 57 households in freshwater fish farming, and fruit tree cultivation models such as pomelo and jackfruit...

Leveraging the forestry strengths of Tam My mountainous commune, in recent years, the local government, Fatherland Front, and mass organizations have been promoting the benefits of forests and encouraging people not to destroy forests for rice cultivation. As a result, people have actively participated in forest management and protection.

In addition, the locality completed the planning of three types of forests according to Decision No. 120/2017 of the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (formerly), and proceeded to allocate land and forests to households and individuals for management...

As a result, by the end of 2024, the number of poor Co ethnic households unable to escape poverty had decreased to 22, accounting for 7.21% of the total number of ethnic minority households.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dang (a Co ethnic minority member in Phu Tan village, Tam My commune) said: “With a stable economic life, in recent years, the locality has restored and maintained the beautiful traditional cultural features of the Co people such as Cheo dance, Tet Nga Ra festival, established a gong and drum team, and restored traditional festivals celebrating the new rice harvest and worshipping deities”...
