According to Master's degree holder and doctor Tran Hoang (University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3), whether in the past or present, feet always need proper care to contribute to improved health.
A place where many meridians and acupuncture points are concentrated.
Explaining why the feet play such an important role in overall health, Dr. Hoang said that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) believes there are 12 main meridians that are pathways for the circulation of qi and blood throughout the body, and six of these meridians begin or end in the feet.
The feet contain many important acupressure points, which are closely related to the internal organs of the body.
These include the spleen and stomach meridians, primarily related to digestive function; the kidney and bladder meridians, which relate to sexual function, musculoskeletal disorders, tinnitus, etc.; and the liver and gallbladder meridians, which are related to various endocrine issues, sleep, migraines, flank pain, menstrual disorders, and more.
The doctor added that the feet also contain many important acupressure points, closely related to the internal organs of the body. By massaging these points, it is possible to regulate disorders throughout the body.
Sharing this view, in an article published on the health website Healthline in April 2023, Dr. Dustin Martinez, a chiropractor in Los Angeles (USA), stated that a 2014 study from Ulster University (UK) indicated that foot reflexology can help improve health and quality of life in many ways.
"Foot reflexology helps increase blood flow throughout the body, thereby helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and lower blood pressure. When stress is relieved, you will find it easier to feel mentally relaxed," Dr. Martinez explained.
Several other peer-reviewed studies also support paying more attention to the feet. Four scientific studies published in 2015 (by a team of experts from MARA University of Technology, Malaysia), 2018 (University of Ege, Turkey), 2019 (by a team of experts from the Léon-Bérard Cancer Center, France), and 2020 (by a team of experts from Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran) all acknowledge the benefits of massaging pressure points on the feet, such as relaxation and stress reduction, improved sleep, improved digestion, and relief from chronic pain.
Given the climate and lifestyle habits of Vietnamese people, doctors recommend that everyone try to keep their feet clean every day.
Proper foot care
Given the climate and lifestyle habits of Vietnamese people, Dr. Tran Hoang recommends that everyone try to keep their feet clean every day. Toenails should be trimmed neatly, and feet should be kept dry, especially between the toes.
If your feet are very dry and cracked, you should apply moisturizer. In addition, you should wear well-fitting shoes, use breathable socks, and women should limit wearing high heels frequently.
Additionally, if you wish to perform foot care or therapeutic measures such as soaking or massaging your feet, it is best to seek guidance from a healthcare professional, especially for those with diabetes.
Similarly, when attempting to self-treat acupressure, specific guidance from a healthcare professional is necessary to select acupoints appropriate for one's constitution and condition.
