The film "Touching Happiness" premiered in Hanoi during the Vu Lan festival and the National Day celebration on September 2nd, telling a touching story about a mother's sacrifice for her family. Directed by Mai Long and produced by Vietnam Image Research and Promotion Joint Stock Company (Vietnamese Images), the film tells a moving story about a mother's sacrifice for her family.

The film features a cast of experienced actors from the North, including People's Artist Nhu Quynh, Meritorious Artists Tien Quang, Tu Oanh, Doi Anh Quan, Ho Phong, and artists Quach Thu Phuong, Quang Lam, Chien Thang, Thanh Huong...

The film revolves around the family of Mr. San (Meritorious Artist Tien Quang) and Mrs. Tham (artist Quach Thu Phuong) in a poor rural area, with three sons struggling to make ends meet. To provide a better life for her children, Mrs. Tham leaves her family to work in South Korea. Her three sons, Bi (Meritorious Artist Doi Anh Quan), Bau (Mai Long), and Gac (Quang Thuan), remain at home, each pursuing their dreams of escaping poverty, and facing numerous challenges along the way.

As the eldest son, Bí (Meritorious Artist Đới Anh Quân) leaves his hometown to pursue a career in the city. Bầu (Mai Long), a young, talented man, aspires to escape poverty in his rural home, but after a setback in his early life, he becomes mentally unstable. Gấc (Quang Thuận), the youngest, is educated and full of aspirations. However, life is not easy, and each member of Mr. Sắn's family faces numerous hardships. Bí has to drop out of school to work as a construction worker to earn money to support his siblings and help the family. Bầu is cheated out of all his money, suffering a psychological shock that leads to madness. Only Gấc remains as the family's hope, currently studying research at university.

The film is set in a peaceful rural village in the northern mountains. This is director Mai Long's debut film, and he invested heavily in searching for and selecting locations. From terraced rice fields, raspberry hills, Lan Ha Bay, Long Coc tea hills to Ha Long Bay, every location is present in the film with meticulously crafted shots.

Mai Long shared that he hopes his film will not only tell a family story, but also bring beautiful images of Vietnam's homeland, country, and people to audiences both domestically and internationally.

The film showcases the skills of its actors. Quách Thu Phương plays Mrs. Thắm, a beautiful woman who sacrifices a great deal for her husband and children. The entire film is filled with the actress's tears, to the point that in some scenes, viewers can notice her swollen eyes from crying so much.

Quách Thu Phương shared that she lived with the character Thắm for almost three years. It seemed that in every scene, the artist returned to the character, fully experiencing the emotions and sharing her laughter and tears.

For audiences, Meritorious Artist Tiến Quang (Quang Tèo) is a familiar comedic face in many programs and films. But in "Touching Happiness," his role is devoid of laughter, instead filled with the mournful sighs of a man after a series of cruel twists of fate. Artist Quang Tèo portrays a simple, honest farmer, a single father raising his children for many years, only to be struck by misfortune just when happiness seems within reach.

In the film, besides directing, Mai Long also plays Bau, the second son in the family of Mr. San and Mrs. Tham. His efforts in portraying a young man who stumbles at the start of his life, with the bitterness and humiliation hidden behind his madness, are evident. Bau is also an impressive role in the film and received enthusiastic applause from the audience.

The film's storyline is simple yet engaging, the performances of the veteran actors are good and impressive, and the soundtrack is well-crafted, enhancing the emotions during climactic scenes. The film evokes a wide range of emotions in the audience. However, the film's weakness remains the script, which reveals several flaws and has some illogical resolutions. The ending is somewhat drawn out, allowing the story to stray too far from reality (the reality of the film's narrative), and the conclusion leaves viewers feeling somewhat disappointed.

Director Mai Long stated that the film was made with socialized investment. However, he believes it would be better to let the film speak for itself, rather than the investors. Filmmaking is an investment field where the returns are not easily visible, and investing in culture requires great sensitivity given its unique characteristics.

"Touching Happiness" is, in any case, a bright spot, a milestone for Northern cinema in the current period, when Southern cinema is strongly dominant. A film by Northern filmmakers released at this time is a great encouragement and motivation for filmmakers and film lovers alike. The film also demonstrates the meticulousness, dedication, and passion of those involved in its creation.
