Livestock farming along the value chain

Việt NamViệt Nam11/11/2024

Given the complex weather, climate, and disease outbreaks affecting livestock and poultry, and the increasingly stringent food safety and hygiene demands of the market, innovating farming methods and organizing value chain linkages is one of the solutions that the agricultural sector and livestock farmers in our province are pursuing. This is considered a stable and long-term solution to enhance value and develop sustainable livestock farming.

Livestock farming along the value chain The chicken farm in Truong Xuan commune (Tho Xuan district) has a product distribution agreement with a business.

In recent years, livestock farming has been shifting in a positive direction, such as: reducing the number of small-scale farmers and shifting towards concentrated farming in the form of enterprises, farms, and family farms with industrial and semi-industrial methods; establishing disease-free livestock facilities, farms meeting VietGAP good livestock farming practices, and organic farming... However, facing difficulties due to disease outbreaks, high feed prices, and unstable prices of live pigs, eggs, and poultry products, the agricultural sector has advised farmers to invest in developing large-scale farms, access science and technology, and sign contracts with livestock businesses in a value chain. Currently, there are two methods of value chain farming: closed-loop value chain farming and integrated production and consumption chain farming, where many organizations and individuals cooperate to raise and sell livestock products under contract. Both of these chain-based farming methods help participating parties share benefits and responsibilities, reduce disease risks for farmers, ensure a stable market, guarantee food safety, and achieve high economic efficiency.

Mr. Trinh To Xuan, a poultry farmer in Truong Xuan commune (Tho Xuan district), said: "When I faced difficulties due to free market sales through traders, I researched and implemented a production and consumption linkage for commercial chickens with businesses. By participating in the linkage, I receive medicine from the businesses, guidance on care techniques, disease prevention and control, and the company will purchase the finished chickens when they meet the requirements. In addition, the contract farming model allows businesses to manage the quality of feed and breeding stock, ensuring technical procedures in farming, thus limiting disease outbreaks; especially, farmers are less affected by the consumption market. With a total flock of about 6,000 chickens per batch, I am currently signing a product purchase contract with Japfa Comfeed Vietnam Co., Ltd."

Currently, there are two methods of livestock farming in a chain: closed-loop value chain farming and production-consumption chain farming, where many organizations and individuals cooperate to raise and market livestock products under contract...

Currently, livestock supply chains are being formed for animals such as poultry, pigs, buffaloes, and cattle, such as: Chicken farming supply chains linked to processing and consumption in Yen Dinh, Tho Xuan, Trieu Son, and Nong Cong districts... with Japfa Vietnam Group, CP Vietnam Livestock Corporation, Phu Gia Agricultural Products Corporation...; The chain of raising lean-meat pigs is mostly concentrated in districts with favorable land conditions, synchronized infrastructure, disease control linked to environmental protection, and a stable market, such as Nga Son, Trieu Son, Ha Trung, Nghi Son town, etc., and is concentrated in mountainous districts such as Thach Thanh, Ba Thuoc, Lang Chanh... The buffalo and cattle farming chain is still limited, with only two large enterprises investing in dairy farming linked to milk processing plants of Vinamilk Vietnam Dairy Joint Stock Company and TH Group ... Alongside this, small and medium-sized enterprises in the province are also quite active in developing poultry farming through production and consumption chains, such as: the industrial egg production and supply chain of Phuc Vinh Clean Food Co., Ltd., Happy Farm Vietnam Agricultural Services Joint Stock Company implementing a production, consumption, and processing chain with 50 free-range chicken farms...

...the existing supply chains have contributed to mitigating risks for livestock farmers in the face of complex livestock and poultry disease outbreaks, unstable markets, and fluctuating prices... Thanh Hoa's agricultural sector aims to have 50% of its total poultry population produced, processed, and consumed through value chains by corporations and businesses by 2025.

It can be affirmed that the existing supply chains have contributed to mitigating risks for livestock farmers in the face of complex livestock and poultry disease outbreaks, unstable markets, and fluctuating prices. Thanh Hoa province's agricultural sector aims to have 50% of its total poultry population produced, processed, and consumed through value chains by corporations and businesses by 2025. Therefore, Thanh Hoa province has been creating favorable conditions for large corporations and businesses to build factories and sign contracts with farms and households to develop supply chains, taking on the role of organizing production, supplying scientific and technical advancements, and securing markets. In addition, localities need to establish concentrated livestock farming clusters and areas; guide people in implementing disease-safe farming practices; and create a favorable environment to attract businesses to invest in livestock development. On the other hand, livestock farmers also need to proactively invest in infrastructure and modern machinery, improve efficiency, strictly adhere to the terms of contracts with companies, and ensure good hygiene practices in livestock farming.
