- Following the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Horse 2026, farms and livestock breeders have been urgently focusing on restocking to stabilize production, ensure supply, and meet market demand.
During the recent Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026, the family of Mr. Phung Van The, from Ban Ha village, Diem He commune, sold 5 fattened pigs and 20 piglets to the market. At this time, his family has restocked their herd with over 20 pigs. Mr. The shared: "In the early months of the year, the weather changes erratically, and the temperature fluctuates, weakening the livestock's resistance and making them susceptible to disease outbreaks. To ensure safe restocking, my family focuses on maintaining hygiene in the pigpens, disinfecting, spreading lime in the pens, and vaccinating the pigs fully. In addition, my family maintains 7 breeding sows to ensure a self-sufficient supply of quality breeding stock, avoiding the risk of disease from external sources."

Not only Mr. The's family, but many livestock farmers in the province are also proactively restocking their flocks in a safe manner. In Thien Tan commune, poultry farmers have prepared their barns and breeding stock early to be ready for restocking after Tet. Mr. Trieu Van Quyen, from Lang Quang village, said: "My family is implementing a free-range chicken farming model on the hills with a scale of 1,000 chickens per batch. To ensure safe and efficient farming, before restocking, my family leaves the barn empty for about 30 days, and at the same time, we clean the barn, spray disinfectant, and sprinkle lime powder. As for the breeding stock, my family imports from reputable companies and farms and ensures they are fully vaccinated."
Thanks to the proactive efforts of the people, the restocking of livestock after the Lunar New Year has been implemented smoothly. To date, the total buffalo herd in the province has reached over 50,300 head; the cattle herd is estimated at over 27,500 head; the total pig herd is estimated at over 172,000 head; and the total poultry flock is over 4 million head… However, along with the increased demand for restocking, the risk of disease outbreaks in livestock also exists if farmers are careless or use substandard breeding stock. Therefore, the province's specialized agencies have strengthened many solutions to help people restock safely.
Ms. Dinh Thi Thu, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, stated: To ensure the safety of livestock restocking and disease prevention, the department has directed specialized units to strengthen propaganda and guidance for livestock farmers to apply biosafety measures, and to properly clean and disinfect livestock facilities. At the same time, it is guiding farmers to gradually reduce small-scale farming and develop concentrated farming, improving production efficiency and effectively controlling diseases. In addition, specialized agencies are guiding farmers to select breeding stock from reputable establishments with clear origins and quarantined according to veterinary laws; and strengthening links with suppliers of breeding stock, input materials, and livestock products to stabilize production.
Simultaneously, the department also directed specialized departments and units to implement the 2026 animal disease prevention and control plan; while strengthening disease surveillance on livestock, organizing vaccination according to plan, and promptly handling outbreaks to prevent widespread disease spread. In addition, controlling the price of breeding stock is also a priority. Specialized agencies regularly monitor market conditions, advise people not to buy breeding stock impulsively when prices are high, and guide them in choosing appropriate times for restocking to reduce production costs.
To date, the total buffalo population in the province has reached over 50,300; the cattle population is estimated at over 27,500; the pig population is estimated at over 172,000; and the poultry population is over 4 million. |
