On the morning of June 20th, the Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, Tang Chi Thuong, presented the decision to transfer and appoint Mr. Ho Van Han, Chief Inspector of the Department of Health, to the position of Director of the Institute of Traditional Medicine for a term of 5 years, effective from June 20th, 2025.
Mr. Ho Van Han is responsible for completing the handover of his current duties to the department's board of directors within 15 days from the date of signing this decision.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mr. Tang Chi Thuong emphasized the significant change in his title to Director of the Institute of Traditional Medicine (instead of Director as before) to align with the new autonomy mechanism for public service units from July 1st.
Mr. Thuong stated that the institute is an institution specializing in research and training. The director is a person with in-depth expertise who leads in research and training. The position of director is to manage and operate the institution, ensuring compliance with all legal regulations.
This is the second time the department has appointed an official without direct expertise in traditional medicine as director (previously the director of the Eye Hospital, and this time the chief inspector of the Department of Health).
"The director's position doesn't necessarily require someone with in-depth expertise in a specific field; their main responsibility is to manage and operate, creating conditions for the development of departments and wards," the Director of the Department of Health said, expressing confidence that Mr. Ho Van Han will fulfill his duties, having gone through many challenging positions and possessing experience in management.
Mr. Thuong added that Ho Chi Minh City will soon have at least four specialized hospitals for traditional medicine after merging with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces. Therefore, the role of the Institute of Traditional Medicine is very important, as it will work with these hospitals to further develop the city's traditional medicine sector in line with its goal of becoming a regional ASEAN healthcare center.
The Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health hopes that Mr. Ho Van Han will quickly integrate into the unique environment of the Institute of Traditional Medicine, which specializes in traditional medicine, creating conditions for staff and employees to develop.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Ho Van Han expressed his deep gratitude to the city leaders, the Department of Health, and the Institute of Traditional Medicine for entrusting him with the important responsibility of heading the top-tier, state-of-the-art institute of traditional medicine in the city and the country.
Mr. Han expressed his honor and responsibility in receiving the new assignment. He pledged to inherit and promote the values of the institute, while improving professional quality and applying science and technology to develop the field of traditional medicine.
"I consider this a great honor but also a great responsibility for myself, especially in the context of traditional medicine facing many new opportunities and demands, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City after the merger with a population of over 14 million and diverse healthcare and medical treatment needs," Mr. Han said.
Prior to becoming director of the Institute of Traditional Medicine, Mr. Han served as chief inspector of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, director of Go Vap District Hospital, deputy director and head of the general planning department of Gia Dinh People's Hospital.
