Mr. Le Van Hong, head of the farmers' association in Trung Phu village, Hau Loc commune (far left), introduces the asparagus cultivation model.
Recognizing the popularity of asparagus, a crop that can be planted once and harvested for many years, Mr. Hong invested in cultivating green asparagus on an area of 4,000 square meters.
When he started working, he learned that the rhizomes of the asparagus plant grow underground, preferring loose, moist soil and a warm climate. Therefore, he focused on soil preparation from the very beginning, creating a comprehensive environment for asparagus to thrive. Sharing his experience, Le Van Hong said: "Growing asparagus is not difficult; you just need a little technique and experience to succeed. After 3 months of sowing the seeds and 4-6 months of planting, the plants can be harvested, and this continues for another 4-8 years. To ensure asparagus has many shoots, high yield, and quality, the plant's environment must always have sufficient nutrients, high soil aeration, and favorable conditions for the asparagus to sprout and branch."
Currently, Mr. Hong's family is applying organic farming methods. Every day, he clears weeds and prunes old leaves to prevent pests and aphids from damaging the asparagus. With three well-built greenhouses and the application of scientific care techniques, his family's asparagus garden yields a stable output of about 30 kg per day. The product is purchased and sold in Hanoi at a rate of about 1 ton per month, with an average selling price of 80,000 VND/kg, bringing in a significant income.
Not content with just farming, Mr. Hong has also diversified his livestock farming. His family maintains a herd of about 100 pigs and over 1,000 ducks, combined with fish farming and poultry egg incubation to ensure a steady supply of breeding stock. Thanks to his ability to utilize feed resources effectively and apply safe farming practices, his model consistently ensures economic efficiency and minimizes disease risks.
As the head of the farmers' association branch, he has always actively promoted and encouraged members to apply scientific and technological advancements and transform the structure of crops and livestock to suit local conditions. Currently, the Trung Phu village farmers' association branch has 95 members, and the movement for excellent production and business is developing strongly. Many members have learned from and followed his model to overcome poverty and achieve legitimate wealth.
In recognition of his positive contributions to the work of the association and the farmers' movement, Mr. Le Van Hong was awarded the "For the Vietnamese Peasant Class" commemorative medal.
Mr. Do Tat Vu, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hau Loc commune, said: "Mr. Le Van Hong is an exemplary association official, always at the forefront of various movements. Not only does he strictly adhere to policies and guidelines, but he is also very enthusiastic in providing technical guidance and sharing production experiences with association members and farmers in the commune, contributing to mutual assistance in wealth creation and sustainable poverty reduction."
According to Mr. Vu Tien Dung, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Association, models like that of member Le Van Hong are clear evidence of the effectiveness of the movement for farmers to excel in production and business. The fact that association officials directly engage in successful economic activities will create trust and a strong ripple effect among members, thereby promoting the movement's widespread and sustainable development.
