In the film, Meritorious Artist Vo Hoai Nam plays the role of Trong.
Born more than 20 years ago, "King of the Dump" is not only a shocking film with its gritty, realistic storytelling, but also a lifetime role for Meritorious Artist Vo Hoai Nam.
The movie " King of the Dump" tells the story of Trong (Meritorious Artist Vo Hoai Nam) - an experienced man, living in a dump, being the "boss" of the community of abandoned people, having to pick up trash to make a living, sleeping among the trash. One day, Trong meets Thuy - a poor banana flower seller, who has to sell her body to have money to treat her mother's illness.
The first person to buy her was Trong, but instead of taking advantage of her, he chose to protect her. Trong brought Thuy to live with him at the garbage dump, where their love blossomed unusually between flies and forgotten lives. It was that love that made Trong - a rough, gangster gradually turn to goodness, and find himself again.
Interestingly, Meritorious Artist Vo Hoai Nam accepted the role completely passively. “Director Do Minh Tuan announced that I would play Trong without asking me a single question. When I read the script, I accepted immediately because I found the character... so similar to me!”, he recounted.

He admitted that the character has all the rough, gangster, and grumpy aspects, but also has moments of gentleness, tolerance, and knowing how to love when meeting the right woman.
Among the props that create the very "real" and "dusty" color of the movie "King of the Dump", we cannot help but mention the jeep. An interesting detail that few people know: the jeep appearing in the movie is actually the personal car of Meritorious Artist Vo Hoai Nam.
The car was borrowed by the film crew to be used in some scenes - a surprising decision but one that brought unexpected visual effects.
In the chaotic, trash-filled and harsh space of the suburban landfill scene, the image of the jeep is not only a means of transportation but also becomes a part of the character Trong himself - a wild man living between the boundaries of rebellion and humanity.

The dusty car contributes to highlighting the character’s wild, liberal and somewhat reckless lifestyle. Vo Hoai Nam confided that when the car appeared in the film, he felt it was “the flesh and blood of the character Trong”.
Thanks to the presence of the car, the character not only comes alive in the eyes of the audience but also makes him feel closer to the role, as if bringing a piece of his real life into each scene.
One of the most unforgettable memories of the "King of the Dump" film crew was the spectacular scene featuring a helicopter - something not often seen in Vietnamese films in the early 2000s. It was a scene recreating a "dream" wedding in the middle of a dump, a metaphorical moment that was both humorous and profound.
Meritorious Artist Vo Hoai Nam shared that as soon as he saw the helicopter on the set, he had a bad feeling. With his experience and instinct, he proactively reminded the pilot not to fly too high, but to hover low to ensure the safety of the crew and extras.
Immediately after the flying scene, the helicopter suddenly... stalled. The whole crew was confused, thinking that a technical problem would lead to serious consequences.
The epic scene made the film crew's heart skip a beat
The cause was later determined to be that during the wedding scene, the extras threw too many chicken and duck feathers into the air to create a “rustic wedding” effect, causing a large number of flying objects to be caught in the propeller. The chicken feathers got stuck in the rotating shaft, causing the engine to jam, making it impossible for the plane to continue operating.
Fortunately, the accident did not happen, but that heart-stopping moment is still a "terrifying" memory that Meritorious Artist Vo Hoai Nam and the entire film crew will never forget. It was an experience that was both dangerous and humorous, reflecting the "crazy - real - fierce" quality of the film they were making.
"King of the Dump" won the Silver Kite Award in 2002 and helped Vo Hoai Nam win the Best Young Actor award at the 47th Asia- Pacific Film Festival held in Busan, South Korea.
