Before this season began, not many people dared to imagine that all three European Cup finals would feature representatives from the Premier League.
The opening match saw Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery. At Besiktas Park in Istanbul on May 21st, the English side completely dominated Freiburg (Germany) with a 3-0 victory to lift the Europa League trophy.
In the early hours of May 28th, Crystal Palace continued to delight fans in England. Under the guidance of manager Oliver Glasner, the London "Eagles" overcame Rayo Vallecano with a narrow 1-0 victory in the Conference League final.
Jean-Philippe Mateta's solitary goal in the 51st minute not only secured Palace's first-ever European Cup but also earned them a valuable spot in next season's Europa League. This double title win brings English football closer to a historic milestone.
In the history of European football, it is extremely rare for a country to win all European cups in a single season. To date, only Italy has achieved this feat in the 1989-1990 season when AC Milan won the European Cup, Sampdoria won the Cup Winners' Cup, and Juventus lifted the UEFA Cup (Cup C3). Thirty-six years have passed, and that unprecedented record has yet to be repeated.
If Arsenal defeat PSG in the Champions League final on May 30th, English football will officially achieve a historic hat-trick of titles. However, the final challenge for Arsenal will certainly not be easy. Their opponent in the final is the reigning champion PSG – a team possessing great character and a host of world- class stars. The French side is eager to defend their title and match Real Madrid's record.
Nevertheless, the London "Gunners" have reason to be confident. Under the guidance of manager Mikel Arteta, they are in stable form and eager to lift the prestigious Champions League trophy for the first time in their history. According to Opta's supercomputer, Arsenal are rated as having a 55.8% chance of winning the title.
The Champions League final on the evening of May 30th is not only a battle for glory for the red half of London, but also carries the hopes of English football as a whole.
