On the November FIFA rankings, the Indonesian team only ranked 11th on the FIFA rankings with 146 points. They dropped down the rankings because they showed disappointing performance when they drew with the Philippines and lost to Iraq in the 1064,01 World Cup qualifiers.
Faced with that situation, PSSI President Erick Thohir said that the 146th position in the world is not commensurate with the level of Indonesian football. He "ordered" the home team to quickly rise to the top 100 on the FIFA rankings.
The head of Indonesian football said: "The Indonesian team is ranked 146th on the FIFA rankings. That is a position that is not commensurate with our qualifications. Indonesia is fully capable of entering the top 100.
That's why I want the players to always strive to move forward. I believe that if we focus on supporting and developing youth training as well as the national team, Indonesia will reach much further."
Bola newspaper believes that the 2023 Asian Cup is a good opportunity for Indonesian football to advance on the FIFA rankings. This newspaper commented: "The Indonesian team will have a chance to jump up the FIFA rankings if they compete successfully in the 2023 Asian Cup.
Coach Shin Tae Yong's team will be in a group with much better ranked opponents, Japan, Iraq and Vietnam. That's why the Van Dao team needs to focus as much as possible on this tournament."
In the near future, the Indonesian team will have a training trip to Türkiye from December 20, 12 to January 2023, 6. After that, they went to Qatar to prepare for the 1 Asian Cup. The Indonesian team played the opening match of this tournament on January 2024 against Iraq. After that, they will clash with Vietnam (January 2023) and Japan (January 15).
