Attendees included leaders from the Department of Sports and Physical Education, the High-Performance Sports Division of the Department of Sports and Physical Education, the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi, the entire coaching staff of the Vietnamese gymnastics team, as well as the legal, inspection, and finance departments of the sector. The Department of Sports and Physical Education reported on all the incidents reported in the press over the past few days, including the case where the coach of the gymnastics department at the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi (also a member of the team) admitted to suggesting that athlete Pham Nhu Phuong donate some of her medal prize money to a fund; and the case where the coaching staff of the Vietnamese gymnastics team recorded the athletes' attendance on days off even though the athletes were not training.
Regarding the first case, Coach NTD has been suspended from coaching the national team and is awaiting further disciplinary action from the governing body. The Department of Sports and Physical Education will hold a meeting with the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports regarding the incident involving this coach.
Regarding the second incident, the sports authorities have not yet reached an official conclusion as they are awaiting a more detailed written explanation from the coaching staff. The requirement is that the coaching staff must clearly report which athletes were paid, from what time, and from whom the money was collected. Speaking to Thanh Nien newspaper on the morning of January 17th, the family of athlete Pham Nhu Phuong stated that Nhu Phuong was allowed to keep 270,000 VND for each Saturday and Sunday training session. The remaining 270,000 VND was given to the coaching staff. In reality, each athlete who trains on weekends receives 540,000 VND. The problem lies in the fact that the athletes were not actually training but were still being paid. Therefore, there are indications that the coaching staff inflated the figures.
Although the coaching staff admitted to the practice of recording attendance on athletes' days off during a meeting with the functional department of the Department of Sports and Physical Education that morning, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism did not provide a final solution at the three-hour meeting in the afternoon.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requires all relevant parties, most importantly the coaching staff, to provide full, clear, and truthful reports. The sports sector will compile and analyze the situation and promptly issue an official announcement to the public, in accordance with the directives of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. If any individual is found to have committed wrongdoing, the sports sector will handle it promptly, addressing the offense accordingly, without evasion or leniency.
