For the poor in disadvantaged areas
The Huong Hoa Volunteer Group was established in 2023 by individuals with a shared spirit of volunteerism. Currently, the group has 8 official members, led by Mr. Ngo Van Hoanh from Bich La Trung village, Lao Bao commune. Mr. Hoanh himself has been involved in volunteer work since 2003 when he was still living in Ho Chi Minh City.
In 2014, after returning to his hometown to make a living running a small mobile phone business, despite limited family finances , having to raise three young children and care for elderly, ailing parents, he actively encouraged relatives and friends to establish a fund to help disadvantaged people in the local area.
The group's priority target groups are ethnic minorities in remote areas, orphaned children, elderly people living alone, and those suffering from serious illnesses in Quang Tri province. Its main activities focus on emergency cases such as providing assistance with hospital fees, funeral expenses, maintaining the monthly "Rice of Compassion" program, and supporting poor students to continue their education.
On average, the group raises over 1 billion VND in cash and in-kind donations each year. Since the beginning of 2026 alone, the group has implemented approximately 40 programs with a total value of around 500 million VND.

The effectiveness of emergency response efforts is clearly demonstrated in the case of Mr. Do Thien Hung's family in Long Quy village, Lao Bao commune. Mr. Hung's family is in particularly difficult circumstances; his wife left him many years ago, and he is raising two young children with health problems alone. Before the Lunar New Year of 2026, Mr. Hung unfortunately suffered a very serious traffic accident. Immediately after receiving the information, the Huong Hoa Volunteer Group promptly launched a fundraising campaign. In a short time, the group received and handed over nearly 150 million VND to the family to help cover timely treatment costs.
Ms. Vo Thi Van, cousin of Mr. Do Thien Hung, shared: “Our family is very grateful for the concern shown by the Huong Hoa Volunteer Group. The timely and swift support from the group and benefactors has helped my brother receive better treatment during his critical period, overcoming the most difficult stage of his life.”
Awakening compassion
To mobilize significant resources and maintain consistent operations, the Huong Hoa Volunteer Group always prioritizes transparency and openness. Group leader Ngo Van Hoanh stated: “Currently, financial transparency is a major concern for society. We recognize that each member must take the highest responsibility in their actions and processes, from writing articles to reporting income and expenses. As the group leader, I have completed the procedures and been granted a dedicated account number by the Military Bank. Anyone has electronic access to monitor income and expenditure. Donations for specific causes are compiled and reported immediately after each program concludes.”
Transparency in management has built trust among donors. As a result, the model has attracted a large number of local volunteers to participate and contribute. Ms. Pham Thi Hong Vi, a volunteer in the group residing in Long Thanh village, Lao Bao commune, said: “Previously, I worked alone, and the fundraising was spontaneous, resulting in a small-scale operation. Seeing that the group operates systematically and practically, I joined three years ago. When participating in an organized group, the power of charitable programs is greatly amplified.”
Besides the advantages, the group also faces difficulties due to members having different jobs, making it sometimes impossible to gather everyone for discussions in a timely manner. Previously, the group implemented a model of donating breeding goats to poor households, but it could not be expanded. In the future, the group is developing a specific plan to continue implementing this sustainable livelihood support program, hoping to receive the support of philanthropists.
Mr. Tran Thanh Lien, Vice Chairman of the Lao Bao Commune Red Cross Society, said: “The Huong Hoa volunteer group has actively coordinated with the commune's Red Cross Society in caring for disadvantaged families, elderly people living alone, victims of sudden accidents, and assisting with funerals. The group's actions have profound humanitarian value, providing strong support for local social welfare work, and contributing to spreading noble deeds and the spirit of mutual assistance within the community.”
