We visited Khai one day in April – shortly after his father, Pham Quoc Trieu (born in 1975), had unfortunately died in a work accident. The small house where Khai and his father had lived for a long time was in serious disrepair, with cracked walls, a leaky roof, and no doors to protect them from the wind and rain.
Khải grew up without the care and love of his mother. From the age of 5, his mother, Nguyen Thi Thom (born in 1975), suffered from severe kidney failure. His father single-handedly worked odd jobs everywhere, saving every penny to pay for his wife's treatment. But illness did not spare her, and in 2015, Khải's mother passed away, leaving the father and son in a state of loss and hardship.
Due to strenuous labor, Mr. Trieu's health deteriorated. The pain from a herniated disc prevented him from doing heavy work, resulting in an unstable income. On March 11th, despite his illness, Mr. Trieu still applied for a job as a construction worker to earn extra income. Unfortunately, he fell and died while working.
Bad news came to Khai just days after he arrived in Hanoi to make a living as a ride-hailing motorbike driver. His family was poor, so his education and healthcare were limited. As a result, when he grew up, Khai was not as healthy or agile as his peers.
"Hearing the news of my father's death, I was devastated. I didn't have a chance to repay his kindness before I lost the opportunity," shared Mrs. Nguyen Thi Keo, Khai's maternal grandmother, with a choked voice.
According to Ms. Kẹo, Triệu's funeral was handled by relatives, family members, and his aunt and uncle. The contractor who hired Triệu provided 60 million VND to help the family cover some of the expenses.
Given Khai's extremely difficult circumstances, the local authorities and residents promptly offered encouragement and support. Several philanthropists donated money and essential supplies to help him overcome the immediate challenges.
Mr. Ngo Minh Canh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Linh Toai commune, said: "The local authorities are calling on organizations and individuals to join hands in helping Khai. However, resources are limited, and we urgently need more support from the community so that he is not alone on the road ahead."
Sharing a similar tragic situation, Le Van Tuan Anh, residing in Thuan Ton village, Thieu Hoa commune, currently studying in class 10A10 at the Thieu Hoa Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center, is also an orphan. Tuan Anh has no father; his mother tragically died in an accident a few years ago, and his older sister, born in 1994, also died in an accident on her way home from work at a shoe factory in Yen Dinh commune. He was taken in by his maternal aunt. However, life challenged him once again when his aunt unfortunately died of cancer. Since then, this child, at an age when he should be "too young to understand the hardships of life," has had to fend for himself.
To help Tuan Anh overcome difficulties, community organizations, the commune, the village, and philanthropists have joined hands to provide material support and moral encouragement, giving him the motivation to strive forward.
Mr. Le Van Ton, head of Thuan Ton village, Thieu Hoa commune, said: “Le Van Tuan Anh is a child with a special situation as all his relatives have passed away one after another. Currently, he is living alone. Knowing his circumstances, the local government has paid special attention to him, and the village leaders regularly care for and support him by guiding him and hiring people to help him with farm work. The village, together with his relatives, has also assigned someone to manage the money he receives from benefactors to cover his school fees and living expenses. Currently, his life is gradually stabilizing.”
Despite the care and support from their relatives, local authorities, and neighbors, Khai and Tuan Anh still need further assistance from philanthropists to help them overcome their grief and loss, continue living, and hope for a brighter tomorrow.
